Isolating and have a dog

Didireallyjusthearthatcanthave · 19/12/2021 05:43

Both my husband and I and our two children have covid, we are all therefore isolating. It’s day two today. We have a dog to walk and can’t. Even if we can get a dog Walker (where we live they are so popular it’s hard to find one, especially this close to Christmas). Our dog is also in season so it makes it even trickier as it either has to be at 6am or 9pm when no one is around. How on earth are we going to manage? She is a high energy breed that is 9 months old and needs walking twice a day. Any suggestions please? We have no one near by to help, my parents are both frail and would be dragged along by the dog.

@Hothammock

She is still scenting the entire area with herself and is vulnerable to pick up infections. You should not be walking her, it's really bad dog manners. Like slinging a poo bag into a bush and leaving it. You are winding up the local male dog population and seem completely oblivious. It's not just about keeping your pup safe from pregnancy. I appreciate it's tough to exercise girls when they are in season as I have been there. You can teach your dog to fetch items and extend that to scent tracking games both in the garden and in the house. It's a great way to exercise her when she is in season and can't be taken out and about. As you have covid anyway it's ridiculous to think you are still planning to take her out!
Oh give over 🙄 it is not at all the same as slinging bags of dog poo in bushes! It's not like the old days when there were stray dogs wandering about likely to follow your bitche's scent back to your house.

@Tashface I feel okay enough to walk her, it’s just it’s not allowed, Boris says so! 🙄

Have you a friend who might be able to help? I walked my friends cockerpoo for them once a day when they all had covid, bit of a pain but not a big deal in the grand scheme...

Didireallyjusthearthatcanthave · 19/12/2021 06:44

@Rainbowqueeen I’m actually on that Facebook group so yes, will have a look at it. I may have to give her some of her Christmas presents early to keep her entertained!

I thought outside exercise was permitted even if you were isolating?

No and it never has been

Isolation means you do not set foot outside your own property unless
it is medically necessary

It's also what the first 3 months of shielding meant, but daily outdoors exercise was added after that. But for the 10 days isolation, including all travel quarantine. it is do not leave your property

Didireallyjusthearthatcanthave · 19/12/2021 06:45

@HappyGoLuckyLuLu I have yes, just don’t want to inconvenience them but I would definitely do the same for them. Will put the feelers out.

Really? Shock I feel really daft now, I didn't know that! (although I've not had covid so not really had any need to check what's what).

Well, I hope you get better soon and that you get the issue with walking your dog sorted out, it can't be easy.

Ylvamoon · 19/12/2021 06:46

We had to isolate (back in the day) due to DC having covid.
We just took the dogs out very late at night and walked them on a public footpath in the fields. Not an other person in sight as it's not a popular spot anyway. I appreciate that the weather isn't great and footpath are muddy but one good walk plus some enrichment should be fine.

Tashface · 19/12/2021 06:47

@nether - thank you. I can't believe I didn't know this Blush

User5329806 · 19/12/2021 06:50

Just take it out when it is quiet, do people really have to come on here to ask these ridiculous questions, people can't seem to do anything without it being validated by Mumsnet or Facebook nowadays

Didireallyjusthearthatcanthave · 19/12/2021 06:52

@User5329806 so what type of questions will you permit us to ask on her? What do you deem acceptable?Xmas Biscuit

In your position I would be walking my dog twice a day, when no one else is around.

Sinuhe · 19/12/2021 06:53

Boris would walk the dog in the neighbourhood, but Dominic has proofed that you are allowed to drive a bit (and visit a castle) to acess the country side!

Didireallyjusthearthatcanthave · 19/12/2021 06:54

This is the thing isn’t it, the Government should lead by example..they have done a great job on that front!

It’s amazing that 2 years on people don’t know what isolation is (not you OP).

User5329806 · 19/12/2021 06:58

You know the government rules OP so either follow them or don't, asking on online forums doesn't make it anymore right or wrong, I personally would walk the dog but that is not in the government rules, just do what you feel is right.

Joystir59 · 19/12/2021 07:03

Least risky option is you walk your dog very early, a good long walk. Then short walk later evening.

Tashface · 19/12/2021 07:04

Not really. As I said: I haven't had covid, so I have had no reason to familiarise myself with the rules. If I did catch covid, however, I would then check the rules and adhere to them accordingly.
StarCat2020 · 19/12/2021 07:07

More people now know the isolation rules than did before this thread.

Surely that is more important than being snidey??

First hand reading of the rules is always better than second hand information from internet randoms

I've got covid and I've been walking our dogs about 5.30am. We live in the deep countryside so I've just used a headtorch.

MrsJamesStewart · 19/12/2021 07:18

Definitely take her out. Just do it very early or late when no-one is about. The risk to anyone outside is minimal anyway. Before we knew my daughter had covid she had been standing chatting to friends watching football outside for a couple of hours. Tested positive later that day. None of the friends caught it. Several months later my boys and i had it - we didn't know and were with friends, boys playing footie and me watching and chatting to the mums. Again no-one caught it from us. And that's standing close and chatting.
The risk of you passing it to someone who might just happen to pass you by outside walking the dog is ridiculously small I should think. So just do it at a time you arent likely to see anyone.

crazycrochetlady · 19/12/2021 07:19

Of course you can walk an in season bitch. I've only had boy dogs but even I know you can. Just keep her firmly on a lead.
Early morning, quiet times, masked.

TenoringBehind · 19/12/2021 07:23

I would not walk a dog in season. Problem solved.

In fact my dog is on day 4 of her first season.

If she weren’t in season I would ask a friend or put an appeal out on Facebook. I’ve walked dogs for several friends and neighbours during Covid. I took my own lead and kept my distance from them during handover.

Faevern · 19/12/2021 07:29

@Stretchandsnap

I think this is one of those situations that you should ask yourself what would Boris do. Grin
This, every time.

I've had it with complying with his rules to the letter, the emotional blackmail to save the NHS that they fucked up in the first place. This government are very adapt at shifting the blame from themselves to the general population.
