A rare complication, but with the rapid rise in covid cases I just want parents to be aware of it. I have seen a few of these cases and they are rising again. Children can become quite severely ill but with treatment can recover rapidly, but they need hospital treatment with immunoglobulins, antibiotics and steroids. If left untreated it can cause heart damage and may even be fatal.
Symptoms appear approximately 4 to 6 weeks after covid infection.
The child will develop a high temperature that doesn't respond well to the usual anti pyretics of paracetamol and ibuprofen.
They can develop a blotchy rash, tummy pains, diarrhoea, red lips and bloodshot eyes.
If you suspect your child could have this please seek medical attention.
Great Ormond street have released a poster, please if you have the chance can you share this on social media. Word needs to get out about this condition.
It is rare, but because of that not many people are aware of it.
