Do we assume is omicron now? London

My son tested positive today (actual test yesterday) and we are in London where I read that 80% of cases are likely to be omicron. Do they even bother telling you now? And I know not every lab tests for the S gene drop out so we wouldn’t necessarily get told.

Probably omicron - that 80% is only going to increase but delta's not disappeared and probably will continue to make up a proportion of the cases for a while yet.

I think only 1 in 5 were getting notified anyway OP. I wasn't notified of the varient but am in London I think you can be pretty sure. Symptoms much more coldy than coviddy IYSWIM, and it spread around like wildfire. So incredibly fast.

Queenoftheashes · 18/12/2021 17:03

We are assuming omicron here. Cold symptoms, loads of people suddenly have it. Not been told anything though. Thought we might do.
On the other hand I didn’t get it while partner did despite living together.

rrhuth · 18/12/2021 17:04

Yes you should assume it is Omicron now.

Hope you are all OK

Thunderpunt · 18/12/2021 17:05

I'm not entirely sure I understand why it matters?
If it's Covid - whichever variant, aren't the rules the same in terms of isolation? (For the person infected I mean)
Am I missing something?

Akire · 18/12/2021 17:09

It matters because all media keep saying panic you need 3rd jab as last 2 do nothing for omicorn and you are unprotected. If you haven’t had it yet or just had covid you can’t get 3rd jab so it’s far more worrying knowing you are home Sick with covid strain you have no protection against and expect hospitals to be over whelmed. Not much of a comfort.
With Delta we know vast majority in hospital are in jabbed but we don’t with this.

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 18/12/2021 17:09

So I guess we prepare for the household to get it. I can’t isolate my primary aged kids and I had my booster 12 hours before his symptoms started. My husband hasn’t had a booster yet.
Symptoms are headache and temp.
I feel very deflated but I do recognise there are many people in a worse position than us.

Because the rest of the household only have to isolate as well if it's Omicron, if they're double jabbed.
Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 18/12/2021 17:14

It matters because I’m not legally required to isolate at the moment but I think we need to act as if we are. And as a pp mentioned because I have to assume the rest of us aren’t protected and plan as such.

Is this the case ? I believe it’s been replsced with daily testing for everyone

Snozzlemaid · 18/12/2021 18:07

Guidance says you're strongly advised to do daily LFT

Wilkolampshade · 18/12/2021 18:11

Rest of household no longer HAVE to isolate OP, they repealed that, but you should do LFTs.
Crazy.

Thunderpunt · 19/12/2021 00:38

Exactly, no need to everyone to isolate - just daily LFTs advised, so it makes no difference. And as for the booster, even without the booster, evidence so far shows that for the vast majority of people it is still relating mild. So again, I really don't understanding this need to know what variant you have
