Has anyone's small child (under 18 months) had covid with their only symptom being a high temperature?

My baby is 14 months. We're waiting on PCR results but a couple of months ago she was hospitalised with a UTI and her only symptom was 4 days of just high temps and tiredness until suddenly she looked really poorly and I took her to a&e and she was admitted with borderline sepsis.

Obviously it's more likely this is covid as we live in a hotspot area and she's been at nursery this week.... but I'm wondering whether to get her to an OOO doctor tomorrow to check her urine so we don't end up in the same situation with the infection getting very bad and hospital.

Hoping the covid result comes early tomorrow so I can make a decision quickly

I would take her to get checked. She's small and it's important to make sure she's ok. You do need to explain you're waiting for a PCR but they should direct you to a specific Covid clinic for any checks rather than regular gp (or our gp sees people via a different entrance)

Yes I think I'll call 111 tomorrow and ask advice about whether it's ok to leave it til the GP on Monday or not. It will only be day 2 of fever but as there's no other symptoms I'm just worried it's the same thing again.

We were in a somewhat similar position a short time ago (DD is 26 months old)

She got sick and her temperature increased.

We suspected covid, so got a PCr done.

It turned out negative, but further work pointed to the viral infection being RSV, which seems to be making the rounds with the smaller children.

You can still seek medical input while waiting for a PCR, my DD has been in A&E twice while waiting for PCR results. Drs couldn’t care less, they are exposed regardless so they just treat what they see. Our GP also saw her but I know that’s not the same everywhere.

Interestingly though when DD had Covid in October she didn’t have a temp at all, asymptomatic when tested and only developed a cough. Never a temp. But that was pre Omicron so might be different with that.

Well she's come back negative for covid so that's good. She still has temps that go down with calpol today so I'll be taking her to the GP in the morning (she's otherwise well, playing, eating and drinking etc so I don't think I need OOO)

I would call OOO and see if you can get her urine checked today, the quicker she starts antibiotics the better for a UTI as you know, my DS was also hospitalised with no symptom but high temp and I now always get him checked same day if he has a fever and no other symptoms. I’ve had kidney infections as an adult from untreated UTI and it’s the illest I’ve ever felt.

Bunnycat101 · 19/12/2021 16:03

To be honest I think you’ll always be more wary. My little one had a horrible first winter including a bad kidney infection and I have been much more likely to get her checked for high fever than I did with my eldest. We’ve had two episodes of high fever in the last month- one where I was confident not to see the dr and another where I did take her to the gp as I just wasn’t happy to not seek a second opinion as she just didn’t seem quite right. Obviously by the time I got there her fever had dropped and she was better other than tachycardia.

YukoandHiro · 19/12/2021 17:24

I did consider it @Poppy709 but she's happy otherwise and not acting sick etc and temp comes down easily, and services are overwhelmed in our area (London - it's an emergency situation) so I'm just going to wait for tomorrow. But if things deteriorate at any point in the next few hours I will of course call in.

Iv spent the past two years worrying about every temp, cough, sniffle in my three children. Tested everytime etc! They have now got covid (all confirmed on PCR) and literally none of them have any symptoms at all! Completely well!! It's crazy! Only know as I tested positive first snd then we've done daily LFTs.
