Moderna vaccine reaction

Wagsandclaws · 18/12/2021 11:48

Hello! Just a quick check - I got this after the moderna booster after 2 Astra Zeneca on Weds.

My arms swollen and hard and there is a red patch that's been there since the day after. You can't see it very well but at the bottom of the red patch there's weird pale bit that looks like a welt.

I suppose I'm just checking it's not looking infected or anything. 🤷‍♀️ I feel fine though Grin the arm is hard and looks swollen from the front it sticks out. It's probably just a bit al reaction yes?

My arm was very painful after my first two Modernas (less so after the booster, also Moderna) but it didn't go hard and there wasn't a mark. Is the skin hot?

Sorry, but I think IIWY I'd get this looked at.

gamerchick · 18/12/2021 11:55

This is a thing with that vaccine. I saw something about it somewhere. Possibly on here.

7eleven · 18/12/2021 11:56

That looks quite extreme. I’m sure it’s not serious, but if you can, I’d just pop to your nearest chemist for the pharmacist to look at.

idril · 18/12/2021 11:56

I had a skin reaction too after Moderna. Not as severe as yours but definitely there. I googled and it does seem to be quite common with Moderna. The advice seems to be to take anti histamine.

But yours does seem quite bad - I would think about getting it checked out although not sure where!!

Make sure you report it though.

Yes - pharmacist would be a good place to get it looked at.

Apart form anything else, it needs recording on the yellow card system

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 18/12/2021 12:02

Is it itchy ?

CityCommuter · 18/12/2021 12:48

@Wagsandclaws it's not serious it's called 'Covid arm' which is a a localised reaction and is not infected... it usually take 4 - 7 days to react and can take a week to go down... there's been lots of cases in the US, Google or look on YouTube at plenty of examples but if you're worried contact your GP... even a pharmacist will have seen this many times...

Wagsandclaws · 18/12/2021 12:57

Ah ok, tbh I'm not particular worried - yes it itched a bit today actually!

It was more painful yesterday and the day before but seems less painful just swollen and yes it's been hot since it was down, just localised where the redness is though.

Poor you, if it’s itchy take an antihistamine tablet once a day until it goes. If it’s not itchy I would take ibuprofen (anti inflammatory).

I have no medical training, just my opinion. If you can get it seen by someone, pharmacist or GP on zoom I think you should.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/12/2021 13:00

I had similar - took an antihistamine and it went down pretty much immediately.

Undertheoldlindentree · 18/12/2021 13:09

My arm hurt for a week after Moderna. I didn't think to look at the injection site in the mirror though - may well have looked like this. I wouldn't have gone to the Dr unless it got a little worse than this though Why don't you do what they do with swelling at the hospital - draw closely round the border of the mark with a pen? Then you can easily monitor whether it's spreading or reducing.

Wagsandclaws · 18/12/2021 13:16

It's definitely got larger since the first day but I don't think that's it's spreading.

The area is hard and swollen as in it sticks out a bit on my arm.

I think it's just a reaction as I'm sure if it was infected or anything I'd feel poorly.

I might send the gp a pic on Monday if it's not improving but your opinions are gratefully received 😊

I have had the exact same reaction today, 4 days after my booster jab. GP has told me to take antihistamines for a few days. How long did it take for the swelling to go down?

NannyGythaOgg · 30/12/2021 22:25

I read that this is happening mostly to women as the injection needle used (as with most things) is based on male anatomy and their muscle tissue is in general closer to the surface.

The vaccine going into adipose tissue is far more likely to cause a reaction.

This is something I read and not something I otherwise know anything about

FictionalCharacter · 30/12/2021 22:42

I had that too, not quite as bad as yours, it went down after a few days and was gone in a week. I had it far worse with a tetanus booster years ago.

Maflingo · 30/12/2021 22:56

I had the same, worse than yours, red, hot , itchy, like a raised welt, it is listed as a known side effect of the Moderna vaccine. I took some anti-histamine which helped a little. It lasted about a week and then faded.

Magnited · 30/12/2021 23:00

Thread title would make a great name for an indie band OP !

Everyone I know who has had the Moderna booster as been Ill one way or another. X hope you feel better soon. X

Cookerhood · 30/12/2021 23:12

I wasn't ill!
Hope your arm is better soon.

MrsHippopotamus · 30/12/2021 23:15

I had this with my second Pfizer and Moderna booster… still ongoing with the booster.
Disappeared about a week after Pfizer.

Cookerhood · 30/12/2021 23:15

Covid arm is an allergic reaction, it's nothing to do with the vaccine going into adipose tissue.
If you Google Covid arm, Moderna you will find lots of information.
