I know there's no point predicting really. I could get COVID tomorrow. I have two very young children under 5yo. But its watching the number every day wondering if there's going to be a lockdown, should I take the kids to this event, do we need to test....on loop.

Everyone in my family keeps telling me they think we will lock down on the 27nd but purely based on as much info as we have. But all the comments from Boris suggest we won't (with a pinch of salt) and the majority of people suggest they won't comply...so what the bloody hell will happen??

I don't know where I am going with this but it just all feels so uncertain Confused

It really is difficult for everyone. We broke up yesterday so I don't have to keep smiling and positive in front of my class any more whilst checking news updates in my breaks. We have been told to keep checking our emails and keep an eye on the news over the holiday. We are ready for online learning but hope it doesn't happen.

I am supposed to be visiting family over Christmas but live in a Omicron heavy part of London so do I risk taking it with me?

Oh and of course I have my end of term stinking cold so am waiting on a PCR test. I actually think the uncertainty and worry about what could be has been the hardest for me and my family but everyone experiences things differently.

@IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas

Plan "Wait and See" IS very stressful.

The government has to wait to act until events have fairly conclusively gone to shit because loads of Conservative MPs, particularly ones on the "Covid Recovery Group" haven't learned from our earlier experiences in the pandemic, and don't know how to think a few steps ahead.

If the government act before the shit has already obviously and incontrovertibly hit the fan at least 55 Conservative MPs are likely to send letters of no confidence to the 1922 Committee, and the PM is toast.

So, in order to hold onto his position, the Prime Minister has to wait while omicron spreads, and hospital admissions begin to rise.

On the bright side, Omicron is so fast, it can't be long before it's obvious to even the slow on the uptake in the Parliamentary Conservative Party that something must be done.

About a week I reckon.

Unless they insist on waiting for "the bodies to pile up" in which case it might be another fortnight.

Agree and are actively turning on Chris Whitty for doing his job.

Not Covid itself, but I'm certainly anxious about what the shitclowns in power will fuck up next.

lanbro · 18/12/2021 07:29

We're supposed to be going abroad on new year's eve, I'm prepping the dc for it probably not happening.

I have 2 hospitality businesses, we had our best day of the month yesterday, I'm just making hay whilst the sun shines because it's all out of my control.

Stupidly read the news this morning to see a circuit breaker 'likely' from 27th. Fab. Seeing parents on 28th. Another Christmas missed for DC Sad

That would be really annoying. DD1 has taken a shift on Christmas Eve and is planning to go out New Year's Eve.

@amicissimma

There were several quite religious elderly people in my life growing up. They couldn't make plans or even say things like 'see you on Friday' without tacking on 'God willing' or 'DV' (deo volente = God willing), or the more pessimistic 'If the Lord spares us'.

I guess they felt less in control of their own destinies a century ago. They may have been right.

I think Inshallah is an excellent word. I don't believe in god but it does remind you every time that nothing is certain and that the best laid plans may go awry

@retraction

Chris Whitty can more than handle the idiot wing of the Conservative party.

Did you see him in committee handing Dean Russell his arse for asking a very stupid question:

When will we find out if there is going to be a circuit breaker / lockdown? Is Boris due to address the country at any point soon? Or is it a case of wait and see if there is an announcement? Urgh just want to know what the plan is.

Tomorrow the papers will probably be full of leaks from today's COBRA meeting.

That's how they usually play it.

Tuliprain · 18/12/2021 20:25

I guess if there are leaks tomorrow perhaps on Monday he will do an announcement.

Uncertainty is so hard. If you think about it, we put so much effort into trying to create feelings of safety and predictability in our lives but it’s all an illusion - anything unexpected could happen at anytime, but we don’t usually believe it til it happens, or avoid facing it. The current situation is probably more ‘real’ if that makes sense. Saturday night philosophy over here Grin

Everything you’ve said resonates with me OP. I’m normally obedient and have followed the rules, but if they ban household mixing after Christmas (dh is working Christmas so we were planning to see family afterwards) I’m very tempted just to ignore it. My parents are triple jabbed, in good health, both mid sixties. We will have had our 3rd jab before we go, 2/3 of our kids have had covid within 90 days. We will be careful and LFT regularly. I can’t see that we are the ones putting pressure on the nhs While Boris is still happy for people to go into pubs, clubs and stadia in the run up to Christmas.

“Spend your money, save the economy, miss Christmas (again).”

But I am trying to be sensitive to my parents’ feelings about risk etc, which is more likely to be the deciding factor for us. I’m mentally preparing to stay at home (or be working all of Christmas if everyone at work has to isolate).
