How can this be

DD has been working from home the past two weeks.
She lives on her own and had her shopping delivered.
Left in her garage as she was on the phone when it came.
The only time she has been out it's to take her dog for a walk.
On these walks she has only passed people not stopped and chatted.
Her next door neighbours have messaged to say they have covid.
But hasn't been near them. No visitors at all.
We haven't been near. But yesterday she felt ill no taste etc.
So got a PCR test at home.
Just had the results and she is positive.
How can she get covid when she hasn't been near anyone.
Can this travel through walls as that's the only explaination.

@AppleCrumbleForBreakfast

Hmmmm, I reckon there's a clandestine lover there somewhere. Maybe that's why she's cancelling you? Too busy secret snogging. I do hope so!
That’s what I thought too.

Or maybe not even a lover, but a friend who popped around for a cuppa.

She doesn’t want to admit it too you because she said she was too busy to see you.

Much more plausible than any other explanation.

Leftbutcameback · 17/12/2021 21:45

When I've done a PCR at home it's more than 48 hours from ordering it to getting the results, even in the best scenario.

Siuan · 17/12/2021 21:46

DH has a cold.
Apart from a walk down a farm track he has been nowhere for weeks. I don't have a cold so unless it's possible for me to transmit a cold without actually having a single symptom I really don't know how he got it.

Delatron · 17/12/2021 21:53

‘She asked us not to go round for this reason’

So she’s specifically told you not to go round and claims not to have seen anyone for two weeks. Then has symptoms and a positive PCR within a day.

Someone’s been over. That’s the most likely explanation.

Delatron · 17/12/2021 21:53

She probably feels bad she’s put Christmas at risk now.

VaccineSticker · 17/12/2021 21:53

People don’t understand or want to accept how transmissible this damn omicron is, and would rather accuse others of lying.

Delatron · 17/12/2021 21:55

I’ve got Omicron @VaccineSticker from an indoor party. It’s more transmissible for sure. I have seen zero evidence that it’s suddenly transmitting more outdoors though? I like to stick to data and evidence.

Darkpheonix · 17/12/2021 21:57

If she ordered the test yesterday. It would come today. How did she manage the test and get the results, today?

Something doesn't add up. I wouldn't drop a neighbour, who I have had no contact with a note to say I was covid positive. That seems quite unlikely.

She then got symptoms quite quickly after, finding out they had it.

She then catches covid, despite having no contact with anyone. Not impossible but, again, very unlikely.

Then manages to get a home test done and results, quicker than everyone else. Again, very unlikely.

All these things have very very low odds of happening, on their own. But all these unlikely events happened to your dd, leading her to cancel a visit that was planned.

She doesn't see anyone for weeks at a time now doesn't want you to visit? I would be concerned for her and/or presume she isn't telling you the whole truth.

Yes of course you can be a carrier of a cold virus without exhibiting symptoms.
NMC2022 · 17/12/2021 22:36

I managed to get a cold badly enough that under my nose was bleeding and I was coughing constantly and did 2 PCR tests. Whilst shielding Confused
I'm guessing delivery driver or postman as I hadn't seen anyone else

Delatron · 17/12/2021 22:41

Colds and flu transmit more on surfaces.

I agree about data of course but if it is more transmissible it is more transmissible - can't think why that would not apply outside too - same transmission process/route just different likelihood due to fresh air.
Flaxmeadow · 17/12/2021 23:11

It's airborne. Thats how

HaaaaaveyoumetTed · 17/12/2021 23:25

I suspect that she caught it 2 weeks ago, is one of the people with a longer incubation period and is now on day 5 or so ago of infection, when symptoms are at their peak.

shinynewapple21 · 17/12/2021 23:26

What about other deliveries she may have had, ordering Christmas presents , Amazon, a takeaway ?

Todayissunny · 17/12/2021 23:30

Maybe the dog. We were told by oncologist to beware of people patting our dog or our dog interacting with other dogs.

This

WonderfulYou · 17/12/2021 23:35

I’ve never heard of a PCR test giving a false positive.

The virus is airborne so it is possible (although rare) to catch it if outside walking the dog.
What’s strange is I know at least 5 people who work outdoors all day and have caught it off their co-workers.

They’ve recognised cats have caught it before so it’s possible she got it from her dog.
It’s also possible to get it from her shopping. If you’ve seen those adverts where someone coughs into their hands and then tough a surface and then a second person touches it and then eats without washing their hands.

It’s very unfortunate for her but I wonder if she was being less careful as she wasn’t seeing anyone as I know I probably would be.
