Could you have Delta & then Omicron a month later?

I had covid in October, fully recovered then got hit sideways by another virus in early Dec - no LF or PCR test as within 90 days of original positive test but I felt equally unwell both times. Could I have had the new variant?

I doubt anyone will be able to give you an authoritative answer. I mean - it could be long Covid following your initial bout of Covid, as there are loads of people who have “fully recovered” from Covid and then relapsed. Or it could be Omicron, which is reported to be better at reinfecting people who have had previous Covid infection. Or it could be something else entirely.

Do you know what the self-isolation advice is in your situation?

Greentime101 · 16/12/2021 16:58

Yes you are correct it’s way to early to know really - I wonder should we start the lateral flows again despite being recent covid suffers?

At this point I have no idea re - self isolation & when one illness rolls into another it’s hard to pinpoint exact dates of symptoms

I'd take a lateral flow and seek advice if positive?

Blupblup · 16/12/2021 17:03

It's ok to take a PCR test again within 90 days - you are supposed to take one if you get symptoms again. You just shouldn't take LFTs for 90 days.

ItsSnowJokes · 16/12/2021 17:04

You are meant to test again on pcr if you get new symptoms within the 90 days of a positive test. So you should of tested.

SummerHouse · 16/12/2021 17:08

You are supposed to test again on PCR if you have new symptoms. I am sure this is new and in response to Omicron but who the heck can keep up.

I think it's highly unlikely it was covid. An infection is stronger than a vaccination or booster in protecting you, but it's possible and who really knows how different Omicron will be in its spreading capabilities.

Greentime101 · 16/12/2021 17:16

Oh wow I had totally totally misunderstood - I should have tested again. I have been educated - thank you!

I have read that it’s very unlikely to get covid again within six months although not impossible.

I could be wrong, but I don't think an infection is stronger than a vaccination in protecting you.

I phoned 119 yesterday to ask this as a lot of my teaching staff weren't sure if they could test or not (close contacts of a confirmed Omnicron case). Answer is yes. You can. It's a different variant so unfortunately you can get it again. Advice was for my asymptomatic staff who have had it recently to take LFTs and if they were positive to follow up with PCRs. Negative so far.
Symptomatic staff who have had it recently to go straight to PCR.

I was really surprised and was glad I clarified it.

AD80 · 16/12/2021 17:30

I was told by test&trace today not to use pcrs for 90 days but say you feel unwell a few weeks after a covid infection to use a lft. A lot of conflicting advice!

Prolapsy · 17/12/2021 11:22

It’s so confusing! Thanks for the thread as I was wondering exactly the same and some of this info is handy.

Clarkey86 · 17/12/2021 15:05

I was positive last week and have this week done a LFT just to see if it was negative - it was. So I know now if I have a positive LTF it’s likely to be reinfection.

MintMatchmaker · 17/12/2021 15:09

T&T told me not to take another PCR within 90 days. Has this advice now changed?

The guidance says you can take a PCR, within 90 days of having covid, if new symptoms start.

Only if you have new Covid symptoms is the current advice I believe.
Greentime101 · 17/12/2021 17:59

I think there are so many virus’ around at the moment plus people reacting to their booster - it’s all conflicting. Just read another thread on here with someone having 2 covid cases VERY close together.

OP posts:
christmaspop · 17/12/2021 18:01

Advice has always been not to test within 90 days UNLESS you get new symptoms in which case you must take a PCR.

So op I guess you'll never know but yes it's perfectly possible it could have been covid again

PuzzledObserver · 17/12/2021 18:47

I can’t find it now, but I’ll swear I saw a news item earlier about a study which showed Omicron was more than 5 times better than Delta and reinfecting people.

It said prior infection with Delta may only give 20% protection against Omicron infection.
