Technical question about a second jab at a booster clinic...

My friend was way overdue her second jab, for various reasons, and was invited to have it last week at a booster clinic. When she got there it was Moderna only, and since she left she has discovered that the Moderna booster is only a half dose.
She is now panicking that she has only been given a half dose as she had it administered at a booster clinic so they would only have had half doses available...
I can't find anyone in real life who would know- does anyone in here know with any authority that they (probably) would have given her a full dose?! Would they even have them available there?
I've given all the reassurances I can (they can see your record, you told them it was your second etc etc) but she's worried, and I think the only thing that will help is hearing 'yes they would have full doses available there in case of any non boosters, so that's what you got'.

So... Anyone work at a vaccine clinic and able to say that?!

What do you mean "would they have them available there?" vaccines don't come in syringes. The vaccine solution is drawn into the syringe, so of course it is possible for half and full doses to be given at the same clinic.

I'd be very surprised if it were a half dose.

The protocol is to bring up their electronic record before vaccination precisely for this reason - the vaccinator can then see which vaccine they have had and which one they need to have next. And then prepare the right dose.

It will be fine. They simply draw more up from the vial into the syringe when it is someone needing a full dose vs booster half dose.

It is not like a tablet that comes pre-prepared in a smaller dose. They have a vial that they can take (as an example) 5 full doses or 10 half/booster doses from. It all comes from the same vial, they just adjust how much they pull into the syringe.

Was her first dose Moderna?

inigomontoyahwillcox · 16/12/2021 15:45

Vaccinator here. She is correct in that the Moderna booster is a 1/2 dose of the primary course (aka first or second dose), but they will have checked the system and confirmed which dose it was she was to receive first and drawn up the correct dose (and it is drawn up rather than in pre-filled syringes) to administer. I haven't heard of a booster specific vaccination centre before - all the centres that I've worked will provide the appropriate vaccination irrespective of how far you are in to the course.

Has she got the NHS app on her phone? This will show her vaccination records and will specify first/second/booster on each record, which might set her mind at rest.

My DH had his booster the other day and he was specifically asked whether it was a 3rd dose (full amount) or booster (half dose) that he was due so I would assume that happens everywhere. I guess the only issue might be that the two vaccines might be different types but then mixing seems to not be a problem and may even have some advantages?

Thank you so- this is very encouraging! I'm not very aware of how the dosing works, so I thought they might come in individually prepared doses- hence thinking they only had half doses available.
Thank you for the reassurances! 🥰

No, first dose was Astra Zeneca.
