Can someone explain me what’s the difference and how it affects hospitalisations?
Chris Whitby was talking about it last night but kids were screaming in my ear and I couldn’t understand.
Thank you

My laywoman's understanding is that Omicron wave in South Africa is being compared to their Delta wave, and compared to that is less severe. But their Delta wave was awful due to low levels of vaccination and immunity. Our Delta wave was flattened due to vaccine rollout and lockdown, so it doesn't mean our Omicron wave will be 'less severe' in comparison. But hopefully someone can correct me here if I have the wrong end of the stick.

I didn't watch, so don't quite know what the message was, but my understanding is that SA has low levels of vaccination relative to the UK. This makes sense. There is definitely a certain machismo about individualism amongst a certain segment of the white population and there is obviously huge social inequalities, even where health care services may technically be 'free'. I used to work in SA and we had so many people who were dying simply because they couldn't afford the cost of transport to get to the clinic for their medication and regular medical care.
