Work Christmas party

Should I cancel our work Christmas party?

I am not especially worried about covid for myself. Have had it fairly recently in any case, and I've had my booster etc. I won't be mixing with vulnerable family over Christmas either. So I am not concerned on a personal level. Just want to do the right thing.

In light of the evolving situation, the government guidance to wfh and the fact that parties were still allowed, I asked staff last week what they wanted to do. A couple wanted to postpone but the vast majority wanted to go ahead, so that's what I planned to do. I thought perhaps they could be encouraged to take a ltf test beforehand etc.

Having watched the briefing last night and heard what the experts were saying (as opposed to BJ), it now feels really irresponsible to go ahead with it. We're all wfh so not mixing anyway. I know that we are still "allowed" to have the party but what if someone got ill and then passed it on to a vulnerable family member? And what about the growing pressure on the NHS? On the other hand, I feel bad for the venue - they would keep our hefty deposit, I suppose, but they would still lose out on the business.

On balance, under the circumstances, I feel like the right thing to do would be to cancel it, but like most of the country, a lot of the staff have had a difficult year and they are probably looking forward to it. I don't want to disappoint them unnecessarily.

What would others do?

I've postponed mine as it was in my opinion irresponsible to go ahead

shabbadababa · 16/12/2021 08:12

This is what I don't get. Christmas party's are still allowed. But I'm not allowed to see my daughters first nativity. Ridiculous

IgneousRock · 16/12/2021 08:14

In your shoes I would cancel and I don't think any of your employees would be very surprised. I'm not particularly nervous about Covid btw.

JoanOgden · 16/12/2021 08:16

I think views may have changed over the last week. This time last week we were all happy to go ahead with our planned work drinks tonight, but the situation has changed rapidly for the worse and yesterday we all agreed to cancel them.

AlexaShutUp · 16/12/2021 08:19

Thank you all, these comments are really helping to clarify things in my mind. @JoanOgden, good point that staff might have changed their minds too.

Ours was cancelled. I think people look will want to be careful so they can see family safely.

gillybean2 · 16/12/2021 08:53

Ours is going ahead still. I’m not going but I had already opted out before they paid in full and omicron took hold. Everyone is doing a lateral flow the night before and the day of.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/12/2021 08:55

We are having ours tomorrow but we don't WFH and are in contact all day at work anyway so it makes no difference really whether it's in work or in the pub.

mindutopia · 16/12/2021 10:02

Our team lunch was cancelled as several people with COVID or in travel quarantine. Our actual Christmas party has been arranged for late spring/summer. I work in infectious diseases, so we're pretty on top of things.

Dh got COVID at his work Christmas do. I told him he should cancel (he owns the company). Got it from a staff member he doesn't normally have regular contact with. He's pretty miserable and a bit grumpy about missing out on lots of Christmas stuff (and the lost income too).

BrieAndChilli · 16/12/2021 10:05

Ours is still going ahead at the moment. We are only a small company and are all in the office some days together anyway so if we are going to spread it around we’d get it from being together at work anyway.

SickAndTiredAgain · 16/12/2021 10:07

If people still want to do it, I’d go ahead. I’d make it very clear it was optional (I know some workplaces it’s basically expected that everyone goes, don’t know what yours is like).

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/12/2021 10:10

Ours was tomorrow and has now been cancelled. It's just not worth the risk now. No-one wants to be responsible for spoiling other people's Christmas by spreading Covid.

BurntO · 16/12/2021 10:13

I’d cancel. Worst case scenario if employees get critically ill after attending a work Xmas party, people will be looking at that company.

JS87 · 16/12/2021 10:21

If you are in London or an area with lots of omicron I would definitely cancel.

AlexaShutUp · 16/12/2021 12:48

Thanks all. Decided to cancel. Hopefully people will understand. Either way, it feels like it was the right decision.

I certainly wouldn't have. Ours is going ahead tomorrow night and everyone is looking forward to it.

Comefromaway · 16/12/2021 13:00

Both dh's and dd's have been cancelled.

Dd's is understandable as it was in a public venue, lots of staff members are getting ill and they have actually had to close the workplace fo ra week.

Dh's was strange, it was due to be held onsite and every attendee spent the day together anyway.

I'm not going to ours in a crowded pub, lots of different people who don't usually work together. I risked a family trip to the cinema last night, I'm not risking being ill over xmas for an event I don't overly enjoy anyway.

vera99 · 16/12/2021 13:04

HM The Queen has cancelled a Windsor bash for 50 to "save Christmas" for her family. Go figure.

Lazypuppy · 16/12/2021 13:08

Ours is still carrying on for people who want to attend, which is the majority

southlondoner02 · 16/12/2021 13:21

Everyone I know has had their Christmas party cancelled, ranging from friends working for the NHS to those working from home in desk jobs. Interesting to hear on this thread that some are going ahead. Wonder if it depends on the sector or area of the country people live?

Babyroobs · 16/12/2021 13:26

Most people I know ( friends, family etc) have had their Christmas parties cancelled by their employers. My 20 year old son came home disappointed last night but thought it was the right decision.

Fallagain · 16/12/2021 13:28

I would postpone it until April and set a new date for it. It’s about protecting the wider community.

belimoo · 16/12/2021 13:29

Ours was yesterday. One person has tested positive today and so everyone who went is now nervously waiting to see whether they need to isolate over Christmas. I'm hindsight it seems silly not to have had it earlier in the month so it didn't risk everyone's Christmas plans.

Reading that makes me so glad that we aren't going ahead! I don't want to ruin anyone's Christmas.

@Babyroobs, it's really reassuring to know that your young ds thought it was the right decision despite his disappointment. I hope that most of our staff will feel the same.
