Covid symptoms but negative PCR

Dentistlakes · 16/12/2021 07:21

I have been unwell for the past 2 days with fatigue, diarrhoea, headache, temperature, sore throat. My PCR result from yesterday’s test is negative. Obviously I may have something different, but I am concerned as I’m due to be mixing with relatives over Christmas and some are coming from another country. I don’t want to cause a problem for them flying home. How likely is it I may have covid but have tested negative? Should I repeat the test in a few days to be sure? Of course I won’t be mixing whilst I have symptoms and will be doing LFTs before Christmas anyway.

Other Illnesses exist. Not wonder there is a shortage of tests

Bubblty · 16/12/2021 07:47

Keep doing the LFTs. Don't waste a PCR test just because its christmas.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 16/12/2021 07:53

There is no such thing as the common cold anymore then no?

SW1amp · 16/12/2021 07:57

Those aren’t covid symptoms
They are 90% of winter virus symptoms

The last stats I saw showed the PCR positive test results at under 10%

That means that 90% of people turning up for a PCR test which what they think are covid symptoms, aren’t covid symptoms

So if you think you’ve got covid, there is a 90% chance you don’t!

@Borisjohnsonshairbrush

Apparently not according to that renowned medical expert Sajid Javid

Thanks for the responses, I’ll stick with the LFTs!

My DH had a negative PCR result from the first day he had symptoms. Five days later he was positive. We already had COVID in the house so just assumed the first test was not correct. I would take another test.

KatyRebecca84 · 16/12/2021 08:59

Assume it isn’t Covid.
We can’t keep testing over and over just in case. Just use your judgment in terms of seeing people as you won’t want to give them whatever you’ve got anyway!!

junebirthdaygirl · 16/12/2021 09:03

Will you 10 days of isolation not be up by Christmas day if you have symptoms for a few days? Even if it is Covid.

uggmum · 16/12/2021 21:21

I have the same symptoms but add in a horrible cough.

My husband has it for nearly 3 weeks.

We don't have covid. My husband went to the doctor and they said he had a virus. They have seen lots of people with it.

On that basis I would assume that your pcr is accurate.

LollipopViolet · 16/12/2021 21:24

I’ve got no typical COVID symptoms, just a cold, but a positive LFT so now awaiting a PCR in the post.

Im really hoping it’s negative and I’ve just got a cold.

Slowfoxfast · 16/12/2021 21:25

The symptoms are different for Omicron. Upset stomach being one of them. I would do another test.

EcoCustard · 16/12/2021 21:39

I lost my sense of taste & smell, loss of appetite had a raised temperature, hacking cough felt run down and tired. PCR was negative, had been in contact with someone who tested positive at a volunteer event for a few hours about a week before. Expected it to be positive but negative. DH came down with it a few days later but also negative. That was in October half term, still have the cough and taste still missing, pre Omnicron though. DH still not feeling great either. Had something similar in 2015 after birth of Dc2 so presume it’s a virus that comes along every few years and knocks the stuffing out of me. Either that or it was Covid and the PCR was wrong.

EcoCustard · 16/12/2021 21:42

*Omicron bloody autocorrect

Changemaname1 · 16/12/2021 21:50

It could be any virus really

I know you mean well op but I don’t get this attitude with people of covid been the only thing people want to avoid , your guest will also likely want to avoid whatever it is you do actually have to also not ruin there Christmas

My concern is really about whether others in the household should isolate. I’m well aware there are other viruses out there, but since the family members concerned may not be able to fly back to Singapore if they test positive for covid then that’s my primary concern. They aren’t staying with us and I wouldn’t consider seeing them whilst I’m feeling unwell, however if I did have covid then other members of my household shouldn’t be seeing them either (whether they feel unwell or not). I’m just trying to be careful.
