Why don't they share their jab recipe?

They might have done. But you know how paracetamol is just a generic thing, why haven't they done the same for the vaccines? Or have they? I'm thinking they need to churn loads more out if the UK are going to use 4 doses per person. Like there's loads of countries that haven't even managed 1 dose yet.

I'm sure someone cleverer than me knows why this hasn't been done. Maybe it's not possible because it needs a weird peice of equipment?

Money. Take a look at the profits and share prices of Pfizer and Moderna since the started administering the vaccine.

Bubblty · 15/12/2021 20:31

Have they not made enough now? And it would be great PR.

Firstly, you know that medicines don’t start out as generic? New drugs cost a lot money to make and most fail so the ones that work need to make their investment back plus a lot to cover the other failures before becoming generic.

mayblossominapril · 15/12/2021 20:32

I think they have but some jabs need to be kept and certain temperatures. In many countries it’s more an infra structure problem. We’ve got the nhs which is set up to deliver mass healthcare, other countries with private healthcare run by lots of different companies/charities how are you going to get them all to cooperate, share records etc. Even pharmacists and GPs who are private businesses are controlled by the nhs.

Yes I know this. And all the research costs. Do you think once they've made this back they'll make it generic?

Good question OP.

Many of the low to medium income countries, charities, and senior international figures (including Biden) have been calling for this.

A temporary vaccine patent waiver would help get the rest of the world vaccinated sooner.

Bubblty · 15/12/2021 20:38

Do we have omicron worse than anywhere else? Just wondering how we can justify 3 doses when some people haven't had 1.

OP posts:
CherryRedDMs · 15/12/2021 20:50

Drugs aren’t ‘made generic’ , the patents expire. That’s a long way away, but it’s anyway not so relevant because of the skill needed for vaccine manufacture.
Consider also the infrastructure needed to deliver a vaccine that needs to be frozen.
Have you heard of COVAX?

Lottiethelemming · 15/12/2021 20:54

I feel like this thread is going to end up deleted. I haven't been jabbed because I'm concerned of the long term effects. I know a LOT of people who feel the same. One of the big pharma companies was taken to court because they refused to reveal what was in the vaccine. It may be to protect their income from it but who knows. I certainly don't.

Bubblty · 15/12/2021 20:57

Thanks @CherryRedDMs. I have heard of covax at the beginning but didn't really know what it was, I thought it was the rich countries like donating a % of their orders? But they haven't got very far.

OP posts:
Bubblty · 15/12/2021 20:59

I mean I'm going to have my booster as I imagine someone clever has worked out it's what we need to do but part of me does feel a but guilty. It would be good if you could opt to donate for your booster and then the money could go to make another dose for someone somewhere else.

OP posts:
CherryRedDMs · 15/12/2021 20:59

Probably someone who hasn’t had the vaccine will tend to know more people who haven’t had it. I have been vaccinated and only know one person (school parent) who hasn’t had it. I know a lot of scientists and doctors who understand very well what’s in the vaccine and they have all had it and given it to their children — so your social circle doesn’t really prove anything.

CherryRedDMs · 15/12/2021 21:01

I would also prefer my booster be used for someone else but once it’s allocated to be used in the UK it realistically isn’t going to end up anywhere else so the best thing you can do is take it.

Bubblty · 15/12/2021 21:03

@CherryRedDMs yeah that makes sense. I would love to be able to donate towards someone else getting their vaccine though. I'm going to see if I can find a charity to help.

My vaccine has tree bark and moths, apparently. And some science magic I assume.

qualitygirl · 15/12/2021 21:10

@Bubblty they do....these are the ingredients alongside the mRNA Active ingredient..

((4-hydroxybutyl)azanediyl)bis(hexane-6,1-diyl)bis(2-hexyldecanoate) (ALC-0315) 2-[(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N,N-ditetradecylacetamide (ALC-0159) 1,2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC)
Cholesterol
Potassium chloride
Potassium dihydrogen phosphate Sodium chloride
Disodium phosphate dihydrate Sucrose
Water for injections
Sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment) Hydrochloric acid (for pH adjustment)

I have a few friends who work clinically in low income countries. One friend works in a rural clinic/hospital staffed by 7 doctors and about 15 nurses overseeing a population of 500,000 people. My friend talks about women arriving at the hospital severely septic having walked for 2 or 3 days with an obstructed labour, or dying en route from a haemmorhage. Even if there were enough vaccines to go around the logistics involved in getting them into people's bodies are prohibitive.

qualitygirl · 15/12/2021 21:14

In terms of making something generic...all drugs once created have a patent that holds for 20years. After that any other companies are free to make their own versions

Incognito22333 · 15/12/2021 21:17

mRNA jabs are the better ones and controlled by US companies. It is not just about money. Neither Russia nor China have access to the formula yet- there is your answer. Only way to regain dominance over those two countries who have worrying influences. Plus even at high levels they now actually think it was lab produced in China to kill off the elderly.

qualitygirl · 15/12/2021 21:20

@Lottiethelemming that's not true...In order for a company to get the go ahead on a new drug, they must disclose all information and and adhere to strict guidelines on how it is made, tested etc
These guidelines are set out in what is called a Pharmacopoeia. Each country has its own essentially but the most prominent ones are the EU, US, British and Japanese

Bubblty · 15/12/2021 21:26

Oh so the recipe is out there! It's just a legal thing.

I have found a charity called VaccinAid but will read more about them.

They can just read the Pharmacopoeia though?

Cookerhood · 15/12/2021 21:31

It's not quite as simple as it being a recipe that you cook up in a lab. I agree the patents should be waived, or they should be non profit like the AZ vaccine.

qualitygirl · 15/12/2021 21:36

Essentially they could but it takes time to produce a vaccine...they don't know EXACTLY how it was made as such. And they can't just start producing it randomly either their manufacturing facilities may not be equipped to make it and it would take years for them to repurpose any facilities they do have
