Two plane loads of people forced to spend Christmas in quarantine

Because of ONE person testing positive on their flight. They are now all classed as close contacts. This is in Australia.

I feel so sorry for these people. Probably just flying home to QLD to spend Christmas with their families, now forced to spend Christmas alone in a shitty hotel.

I feel sorry for the but when you fly at the moment it’s always a possibility.
When I flew within Europe in July and there was a positive case from the plane and T&T contacted us to say we had to isolate. We were actually quarantining as per the rules at the time already so it didn’t matter.
Flying is a gamble right now

BootsScootsAndToots · 14/12/2021 21:13

They have to quarantine for 14 days. So they'll be out by Christmas day.

It's the risk you take flying, especially in Aus where some states are pretty strict.

Jacaranda75 · 14/12/2021 21:15

@Hoppinggreen I get what you're saying, but lots of these people might not have seen their families for 2 years. I just imagine them all excited and it upsets me. I flew a couple of weeks ago and loads of people that were due to get my flight were turned away as they didn't have the right QR code. Some of them you could see had bags of presents. It was heartbreaking.

Confused

How will they be out by Christmas day? 14 days from today is the 28th December.

Jacaranda75 · 14/12/2021 21:16

@BootsScootsAndToots It's the 14th today, so they'll be out by the 28th. Two days after Boxing Day.

@Jacaranda75 you're right, it's heartbreaking and also bonkers. I think the world has gone mad.

BootsScootsAndToots · 14/12/2021 21:19

Oh yeah, bad maths! My DC literally just said this morning it's 10 days to Christmas 😳

BootsScootsAndToots · 14/12/2021 21:21

We're in Aus so it's the 15th already here

MissAmbrosia · 14/12/2021 21:25

I haven't seen my family for 2 years. At the mo I would have to do 6 tests x 3 to go to UK for the week, and that's not even taking into account the risk of testing positive. So I will stay at home. It is was it is. You take a huge risk travelling at the moment.

Linguini · 14/12/2021 21:26

I don't really have a huge amount of sympathy to be honest. There is a pandemic, they should have planned for the possibility of 14 days quarantine and booked with that in mind.

Sirzy · 14/12/2021 21:28

You travel that’s the risk you take.

My partners mum is flying in for Christmas. We know there is a risk to it and have a backup plan just incase.

Jacaranda75 · 14/12/2021 21:29

@Linguini not everyone can get that much time off work in one go.

That is sad. When I took a flight this year there was an elderly couple at the airport who didn't have any means of proving their vaccine status, no smart phone or email. They were stumped. It took me ages to work out all the things, I'm not the quickest to understand new things but I also had help and I worked it out. It made me think about how those who don't have access to tech or otherwise couldn't work out all the new hoops could inadvertently be prejudiced against.

I saw another long haul flight close its boarding when half the passengers were still in the check in queue because staff couldn't get through them quickly enough. The flight just left them. So many were crying or were overwhelmed.

I've never been so anxious when travelling before. I was in my own and just couldn't relax until its got through to the departure lounge as it felt like at any minute someone could find something wasn't quite right and I'd miss my flight.

I had to make that trip and I was prepared to be stuck in a hotel upon landing if authorised too. I presume these poor folks feel they also had to make that trip. It's sad, but any flight now comes with this possibility.

Porcupineintherough · 14/12/2021 21:31

Well if they are travelling to see family I'm sure they wont be wanting to infect them with coronavirus now they know theyve been exposed. Thst wouldn't be much of a Christmas gift.

julieca · 14/12/2021 21:31

This is why I haven't flown.

LethargicActress · 14/12/2021 21:33

I thought people had to quarantine on entry to Australia anyway? Has that changed?

Jacaranda75 · 14/12/2021 21:35

@LethargicActress yes the rules have been relaxed for vaccinated passengers.

Assume it's an Australian rule that absolutely everyone has to quarantine? Bloody awful for them.

In my experience (as a travel professional dealing with travelling customers throughout) in Europe / Short-Medium haul flights it's only been the people seated immediately around a positive case that have had to isolate.

A client's husband was traced from a flight this summer but her and her DC just across the aisle weren't.

ImInStealthMode · 14/12/2021 21:37

Apologies, I see at the bottom of the article it's a Queensland thing, not an Australian thing.

thewhatsit · 14/12/2021 21:38

@julieca

This is why I haven't flown.
Yep. The ever changing rules. The risk of needing to isolate or testing positive abroad and being stuck. It’s incredibly daunting.

I have plenty of friends who will be flying close to Christmas and without exception they are all flying to see friends and family abroad that they have missed out on seeing so much over the last 21 months. I would feel bad for them if they got stuck abroad for testing positive or if they had to isolate on return to the U.K., missing work and return to school etc, but these are known risks when you book a flight these days, sadly.

Lorriestakingppe · 14/12/2021 21:39

God there are some miserable, unsympathetic sods on this chat. I feel so sorry for the travellers, imagine thinking you were going to get to see your family after two years or more apart and you end up shut, going crazy, in a grotty hotel, too sad.

Jobseeker19 · 14/12/2021 21:39

This was expected if you chose to fly at this time.

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 14/12/2021 21:40

Right at the moment, I must admit the thought of a peaceful Christmas in quarantine sounds rather attractive to me.

Of course it's gutting for them. But it's a gamble they chose to take. Unfortunately, they lost.

These were domestic flights, surely there were options other than planes. Coaches, cars, trains?

Bussinbussin · 14/12/2021 21:49

Where does it say they'll be in hotel quarantine and not at home?
