Should I go to the hairdresser?

I have an appointment for a haircut on Monday 20th. I really, really want to get this done but am now worried about contact risk.

It's my 40th birthday on 23rd and DH and I have booked a posh meal. I'm determined to go to this and to have christmas day with my mum and dad two days later. DH and I have both had the initial two vaccinations but our boosters are not booked until 27 December. We are trying to reschedule but, tbh, even if we got done tomorrow, wouldn't be protected for christmas week.

We've both been wfh and haven't seen anyone inside since 3 December. We made the decision to cancel other plans in order to keep ourselves as safe as possible and minimise risk to these birthday/christmas plans. We've been at home or going out for walks (in the countryside, rarely coming into contact with others) in our free time. We are meeting my brother, SiL and DNs for a walk this weekend but will be outside and keeping distance the whole time. I also wear my mask, even when outdoors and we've been LFTing every 2nd day.

I'd really like to have my hair done for my birthday. I'd be travelling there and back by car so no public transport but I do worry that it's still a bit too much close contact so close to these other dates which I've tried so hard to protect.

Will be masked in hairdresser as will she. Receptionist also takes temperature on way in.

Throwing this open to MN jury.

Hairdressers have generally been quite strict with covid precautions. At least where I am they have. But if you are that worried, don't go, or get a mobile hairdresser to come to you and do it in the garden.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/12/2021 13:37

I am trying to reduce my contact with people in the run up to Christmas so we can get away to our DDs. I am still planning to get my hair done on the 16th and my nails done on the 22nd as they seem like low risk settings. Well spaced and ventilated, screen, masks, etc.

augustusglupe · 14/12/2021 13:41

I'm going tomorrow. I'm 57 and had one jab as I'd put it off for ages, due 2nd around end of Jan.
It hadn't entered my head not to go to the hairdressers, I'm looking forward to it. I'll wear a mask and so will she.
When me and DH had Covid in March '20, he had a temp and I didn't, so what on earth taking a temperature is meant to prove I don't know!?
Also looking forward to Christmas with my family which is going ahead as planned!!

OP get your hair done. It’s either that or you give up on hairdressers forever. Covid is here to stay.

Whattochoosenow · 14/12/2021 13:46

Just go.

Itsbeenalongweek · 14/12/2021 13:56

Had mine done on Saturday. We were both masked and there was plenty of space between me and any other clients. Felt safer than going into a shop. Just go.

CousinGreg · 14/12/2021 14:01

Go or find a crap one that you can go to this week.

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 14/12/2021 14:10

It's really up to you and what you're comfortable with. Would you feel OK with your decision if you did get covid? Will it cause major issues if you can't do your plans?

TurtleBeach · 14/12/2021 15:37

ok - that sounds pretty conclusive! Haircut it is!

It took so long for me to find a hairdresser who understands my curly hair so going somewhere else is not an option. The fear of ending up with nice hair while isolating, missing my birthday treat and not seeing my parents is still very real. I hope I don't end up regretting this but it does seem that the risks will be minimised.

I not only went to the hairdresser yesterday, despite being overdue for a booster, but I booked my next haircut for a couple of months time, in the hope that they'll still be open then. Go!!

gamerchick · 14/12/2021 15:46

I'd go me in case they shut again.

Bluebellbike · 14/12/2021 18:44

I am going to the hairdresser this Thursday. I was out at the theatre last Sunday night and have been to the pub a lot recently. I have had all 3 jabs and wear a mask in all indoor public spaces. At the theatre on Sunday practically 100% of the audience were masked. I am loving going out again and dont want to go back to staying indoors all the time.

Guacamole001 · 14/12/2021 19:14

I went today. They have very high ceilings and the salon is very roomy. The door is also opened regularly to ventilate.

I nearly cancelled but just in case we are in restrictions in the new year I decided to go ahead.

Lovely coffee and a mince pie there too.

LemonCake79 · 14/12/2021 20:11

My salon is large and airy and they've increased their opening hours so they aren't all in together. The hairdressers and the customers have worn masks throughout even when we didn't have to.

I was chatting to my hairdresser a few weeks ago and she said only one of the 9 hairdressers has had Covid and she thinks she caught it at a festival over the summer.

I know that's all anecdotal but it does support the idea that hairdressers aren't high transmission places.

99victoria · 14/12/2021 20:25

If you haven't been out anywhere or seen anyone since 3rd December why are you doing lfts every other day? Where do you think you would have been exposed to covid?

StormzyinaTCup · 14/12/2021 20:48

I’d say you are at less risk going to the hairdresser than you are going out for a meal. I went to the hairdressers last week and their safety measures were very good.

My local pub, which is very busy at the moment and no masks required, have just had their chef go down with Covid so have had to contact anyone who ate there just before/after and subsequently had to cancel all Christmas bookings.

Icenii · 15/12/2021 16:49

Im not sure whether to rearrange to in the new year. It's the catching covid and having to cancel my plans over the next two weeks that is worrying me now, including DDs brothers coming to stay (15 year age gap). I just want to be able to see family and not have to cancel.

theDudesmummy · 15/12/2021 16:50

I'm not, although I would like to. I am on the super-cautious side, and I have a (very small, fully-vaccinated, no vulnerable people) Xmas planned. I will get DH to cut my fringe before Xmas. Why risk ruining Xmas or getting ill for a haircut.

Willyoujustbequiet · 15/12/2021 16:54

My salon has been very strict - disposable gowns, all stylists wearing masks AND visors, temp taken on entry etc...and questions as to health status. I've seen the owner cleaning surfaces too.

Honestly its the safest place to be lol.
