What are the chances?

Ds tested positive last Monday so is on day 7 of his isolation. Dh and I have been LFT testing everyday and so far have been negative with no symptoms. What are the chances of us escaping without getting it? To begin with I felt fairly certain we'd all get it but as the days go on I'm starting to feel a bit more hopeful. However if we do test positive our isolation period will start all over again and it will interfere with our Christmas plans which include going away to stay with family.

Does anyone know when the rate of transmission is at its highest? Can I be tentatively hopeful that we're ok or is it still too soon to say? Was anyone else unfortunate enough to test positive right at the end of their contacts isolation?

Have you both done PCR tests as close contacts, I would go by PCR test result before knowing if you’ve managed to avoid catching it.

snowmansballs · 13/12/2021 17:30

I haven't yet. Mainly because it wouldn't be accurate. If I tested negative to begin with then whose to say I wouldn't have picked it up an hour or a day later since I'm living with ds everyday? I did say we would PCR test immediately if either of us showed symptoms which we haven't yet. May also test now we are approaching the end of isolation just to confirm we are both still negative. But we've done a LFT each everyday so far.

DH and I started showing symptoms 8 days after DS tested positive. We were doing daily LFDs but they always came back negative.

snowmansballs · 13/12/2021 17:35

@martim how annoying :( I would ideally like to avoid it altogether (obviously) but if we were going to get it it would have been best at the start so we could all isolate together

There are about a million previous threads on this subject and the answer is always the same.

It "ripped" through my whole household

Or

No one else caught it (true in my case)

So just take your pick

snowmansballs · 13/12/2021 17:59

@Nidan2Sandan did you take any specific precautions? We are keeping windows open and wearing a mask around ds but he's not isolating in his room and we are still sharing a bathroom.

Nope, none. Shared a bed with DH, still hung with my kids. No point worrying about keeping apart when we had been living in close quarters right up to the positive result.

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 13/12/2021 18:30

Its 10 days isolation for a reason. Also do a pcr as a close contact. You need to know if you've got it so you know to start your 10 days.

My 8 year old tested positive on the Monday and by the Wednesday both me and my husband tested positive. My 1 year old on the other hand has stayed negative all the way through!!
My sons friend from school tested positive and both her parents did catch it - there's no rhyme or reason for anything with this virus - vaccinated or not. I pray you don't get it and you still have your Christmas plans x

That was supposed to say both parents DIDN'T catch it x

I'm not sure what extra a PCR test taken on say, day 2 or 3, would tell you?
Warhertisuff · 13/12/2021 18:47

I think there's a over-reliance on PCRs in this circumstance. Firstly they're far from fail safe especially if you're not showing symptoms, and secondly a PCR is of any use if you're actually positive at the time you took it.

snowmansballs · 13/12/2021 18:55

Exactly my thoughts. What would be the point of a PCR in this case when I could literally catch it off my ds at any time? We live together and I can't do one daily like with LFT. We haven't been anywhere anyway so are isolating by default.

I guess as pp said there is no rhyme or reason and I just have to hope for the best. Would be gutted to get it when freedom is so close though :(

I didn’t catch Covid from Ds17 when he had it after attending Boardmasters in the summer despite driving him home ( which took 8hrs) in a small car with two other friends. However I did catch it from a friend 3 weeks later. I spent about an hour with her in the car despite her wearing a mask and having the windows wide open. She had just started with symptoms and her positive pcr came through the next day. I was testing positive a day later.
I suspect it’s all to do with the variant involved.

Amberflames · 13/12/2021 20:47

The reason for doing a PCR test earlier rather than right at the end of the 10 days is if you are asymptomatic your new isolation will start from the day of the test.

GypsyWanderer · 13/12/2021 21:21

For context, there’s me, DH and 4 kids in our household. DS13 got it in October and nobody else caught it. Last Monday DD10 and DS16 both had positive lft’s and on Thursday DS13 (not the one who got it in October, his twin) tested positive on lft. All positive pcr’s too. Yet me and DH haven’t got it (I know we still have a chance of catching it but it seems less likely as each day goes on). We’re not isolating anyone from our members of the household, we have one bathroom and all 3 boys share a bedroom.
