Post-menopausal, bleeding after Moderna booster

HollywoodTease · 12/12/2021 23:14

That really. I'm 57, no periods since Jan 2018 and only patchy ones for 2 years before that. Had a clear smear in October.

I had my booster on Thursday. Noticed some dark staining in my pant liners yesterday. Today I am bleeding enough to need a proper sanitary pad.

I've done a yellow card report and will ring my gp tomorrow, but I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of this or experienced it? I'm a bit freaked out.

Sorry, posted in the wrong place. Have asked HQ to move it to Coronavirus.

Yes, I had similar after my second Pfizer. And I’ve seen others on here mention it. Mine led to a two-week referral to gynae as post-menopausal bleeding generally does, I think. All was fine. I wasn’t too worried as I’d made the connection with the vaccine.

thatsallineed · 12/12/2021 23:45

Similar age to you and also post-menopausal. I had two AZ and then the Modena booster. Apart from a slightly sore arm for a couple of days I've had no after-effects at all.

dontbenastyhaveapasty · 12/12/2021 23:47

I’m not menopausal, but had unusual non-period like bleeding for 48 hours after my moderna booster. It was just watery blood, nothing like a period, and totally not at the right time of the month. I felt dreadful for those 48hrs too.

I’m sorry you had this but I’m rather relieved to find someone else mentioning it!

SparklingLime · 13/12/2021 00:05

Should have said, I think you’re absolutely right to talk to your GP. None of us should assume any abnormal bleeding is a vaccine side-effect.

Jupiter15 · 13/12/2021 05:58

Any post menopausal bleeding should be investigated. Make an appointment with your GP.

This update from The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG) is interesting & will hopefully reduce concerns in anyone worried about having the COVID-19 vaccination. As you know OP, your GP will treat your case as a post menopausal bleed & do a two week referral to gynaecology

SparklingLime · 13/12/2021 12:24

Thanks, @Newhorizon21, that’s helpful.

HollywoodTease · 15/12/2021 16:15

Spoke to my GP today, 2-week referral to gynae as expected, and they said I should do a yellow card but I already did! Apparently although not common there is anecdotal evidence that this has happened to many women.

I’ve only had 2 periods since may 20, both were after Covid jabs. I guess I’ll get another after a booster?

MercedesBenz · 20/12/2021 23:05

Had a Booster not Astra zenica , on 15th and today have dragging feeling like a period is about to start and some v v light vaginal blood smear , 59 and no periods for 10 yrs
Tbh panicked a bit til I read this thread , how do I do a yellow card ? Anything else I need to do ?

Katie517 · 20/12/2021 23:31

Not post menopause but my usual like clockwork period arrived a week early the day after my Moderna booster, there were a couple of other posts saying the same thing on a different thread so it’s obviously doing something. Also yellow carded

HollywoodTease · 29/12/2021 17:40

Quick update, I've been for a scan today and it turns out I have a thickened endometrium.

Hysteroscopy is the next step, in another couple of weeks. It may still be nothing, but it's looking likely that it's actually something.

So far from being just a side effect it's looking likely that my bleed was a symptom of something else, and if the booster prompted the bleed it's done me a favour.

For reference, a normal post - menopausal endometrium should be about 4mm thick. Mine was measured at 18mm.

I'll probably start a new thread or get HQ to move this as it seems my issue may not be connected to Coronavirus or my booster after all.

But ladies, if you have had a change in your cycle after a vaccine please go and get it checked out because you never know.

@HollywoodTease
Thank you for the update
I hope everything turns out ok
Your update had given me the
Push I needed to speak to the doc myself , thank you

Snog · 05/01/2022 21:56

@HollywoodTease how are you doing?
I've just been referred for the same thing and feeling v nervous about the investigations, especially as my local hospital won't let anyone go with me.

HollywoodTease · 18/01/2022 18:16

Had my hysteroscopy today, which confirmed I have endometrial cancer.

I'll now be fast-tracked for a hysterectomy, which hopefully should get rid of it all.

I'm upset that I have cancer, but also kind of relieved because it's early stages, good recovery rates, and at least I know what I'm facing now.

1 month 8 days from bleed to diagnosis, thank god for the NHS!

Sorry to hear that Hollywood

I had endometrial cancer diagnosed right in the middle of the first lockdown. I was 48 at the time. It sucks, but it is pretty treatable. They may be able to do your hysterectomy laparoscopically and if so, the recovery time is much better. I was only in hospital one night and walking gently within four or five days.

I hope all goes well. If you are on Facebook, the Hysterectomy Sisters group is great for support and advice.

Snog · 19/01/2022 13:06

Sorry to hear of the diagnoses @HollywoodTease and @MrsMigginsCat. What a shock.
Well done for acting on your symptoms though and all the best for a good recovery Thanks

Theonlyoneiknow · 19/01/2022 15:54

Glad you were fast tracked and were seen quickly @HollywoodTease, hope you are recovering well x

@mercedesbenz how did you get on?

AgnesWaterhouse1566 · 20/01/2022 07:27

Best of luck for your recovery @HollywoodTease

I read your thread earlier in the week and having previously dismissed a bit of bleeding as settling into HRT I spoke to my doctor and I'm now waiting for my scan appointment. Hopefully nothing serious but if it is then I have you to thank for me catching it early. The positive power of MN! Flowers

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 20/01/2022 07:41

I’ve had several bouts of bleeding following various jabs over a number of years, currently having a bleed which has been continuous since early November after booster.
I had all the investigations in the summer, NAD and am now waiting for a further gynae appointment which will likely result in surgery. According to my consultant it’s rare but not unheard of to have this reaction. I’m 58.
