If currently unvaccinated, is there any point now if 3 jabs are needed to protect against Omicron?

Genuine question- as by the time triple jabbed we'd be a further 3 letters through the alphabet, surely?

I have a relative who won’t get jabbed and is positively hostile about it. It’s extremely frustrating. I think we all owe it to our relatives to at least try to persuade them. I’ve tried recently to no avail though.

@TheCreamCaker

One of my sons is unvaccinated, says he'll never have the jabs. He never gets so much as a cold, is slim, healthy, doesn't smoke. He hasn't had a day off sick for 7 years. I truly hope he's right in not having the jabs.
I have a friend who was like that. Fit, healthy, young, doesn't smoke.

He got covid in the first wave and has been very sick ever since. Can't work, can't go upstairs in his house without his wife helping, and has barely left the house since he got out of hospital last April.

My upstairs neighbour got it this summer before she was eligible for. vaccine. Late twenties, fit, healthy. She was very, very sick for several weeks and is still on inhalers and has a really nasty cough.

I can't get my head around why anyone would take this risk.
@TheCreamCaker but do you wish he would listen? He’s putting others in danger as he will spread it. People who are unvaccinated are also unlikely to test themselves or isolate if required. Sorry to hear what a dreadful time you had.
This is based on what exactly?

FreeBritnee · 12/12/2021 20:38

I dont think it's that three jabs are the magic number. It's that a recent immune response to the virus is what will help.uou have a mild reaction, hence a top.uo dose is required. So go get vaccinated.

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 12/12/2021 20:38

Any immunity is better than no immunity? So definitely worth it, imo.

orangetriangle · 12/12/2021 20:43

does anyone know how long after having covid the delta variant can a completely unvaccinated person have their first jab and then how long between each jab is it 3 months?

orangetriangle · 12/12/2021 20:45

to add symptoms started in 24th Nov and took a lateral flow test that night which was positive

gogohm · 12/12/2021 20:50

One is better than none - do it

User9911 · 12/12/2021 20:52

@ orangetriangle you can get it 28 days after having Covid but will already have a high level of protection due to actually having Covid

the80sweregreat · 12/12/2021 20:52

My friend laughs at us having the jabs and boosters.
There isn't any point in engaging with them as apparently they know better than anyone else.
It's not worth even trying .

Think it's 28 days after positive test or 28 days after symptoms started.

I'm sorry your friend laughs at you, that's not nice. Vaccinated or unvaccinated, we really just want all our friends to be ok. We shouldn't be letting this divide us.
orangetriangle · 12/12/2021 21:08

it's no laughing matter theres nothing funny about the whole situation it's the delta variant that my dh had so after 28 days have passed he will be getting his first vaccination. Our daughter almost died from an mmr booster vaccination so he was very wary but after having covid so badly he has changed his mind
thanks for your help all

Yourforever · 12/12/2021 21:15

I've unfortunately only had one vaccination and can't have any more, so I'm hoping pps are correct and something is better than nothing!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 12/12/2021 21:19

My friend is an anti vaxer and is currently in ICU intubated.

Brigittebidet · 12/12/2021 21:26

How refreshing to see a mostly polite thread with people putting forward advice without name calling. It is really not like that very often on MN these days!

orangetriangle · 12/12/2021 21:28

not an anti vaxxer have had all mine including booster
there is a difference between an anti Vaxxer and someone who has seen a severe reaction to a vaccination
Worrying times for us all

Tistheseasontobeknobby · 12/12/2021 21:46

What about if you’ve had covid (March 2020, before vaccinations obviously) and now have long covid, will you be protected without the vaccines? @User9911

I think protection officially lasts 180 days so probably not protected now no. I had Covid a few months ago and survived so reluctant to get vaccines plus boosters plus more boosters next year when I have had it and survived. I’m in my twenties and won’t worry about vaccines until I’m older as I feel I am not in an at risk category plus I have survived Covid. If they mutate and get weaker each time then even better. I refuse to be vaccinated every 3-6 months for the rest of my life for something I have already survived.
Tistheseasontobeknobby · 12/12/2021 22:04

@User9911 This is the thing, I don’t want to make my current symptoms worse, I’ve read conflicting reports about immunity and have read if you’ve already had it you’re more protected than when vaccinated 🤷🏻‍♀️

According to the Zoe Covid symptom study app, protection from 2 doses of either AZ or Pfizer is better than protection from natural infection alone. The best protection comes from having Covid followed by 2 (or I suppose now 3) doses of vaccine.

That was against Delta, though.

The way I think of it is that each time your immune system is exposed to either the virus or the vaccine, it reacts to boost your level of immunity. The longer you go without such exposure, the more your protection wanes. Don’t know if there’s any scientific basis to that.

There’s been a lot more variants identified then we see in the media, and they all have different concerns or may have been limited in a region.

cov-lineages.org/lineage_list.html

There will be other variant mutations that have not been identified, including potentially those that have begun and passed into nothingness

An overly strong strain won’t pass on very much as those suffering from it will isolate etc, an easily transmitted one might not be strong, a variant may be beaten by vaccines already produced or may be sufficiently different to survive existing vaccines

We all have a basic start from our natural immune system, but you must first be infected for your immune system to try and produce a defence. (Your past medical history can influence how good a start you get)
With just one dose your immune system is triggered to act, so you’re in a ‘better’ position as soon as it begins to act
The original findings were that the vaccines had the optimum effect two weeks after two doses, and that the more vulnerable would require a third dose plus two weeks for the optimum effect. Subsequently there is the winter booster

As you have had none so far then you are currently relying on only your natural immunity, getting one now will give you a start and your doses will be ‘fresh’ rather than having gone to the optimum then dropped in effectiveness

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/12/2021 09:38

Yes, of course it’s worth it. This isn’t going to go away.

Frazzled2207 · 13/12/2021 09:38

It is unlikely to stop you catching it but each vaccine will give some protection from severe disease.
