Positive LFT and negative PCR?

ThoseFestiveLights · 11/12/2021 16:57

Met someone this afternoon who tested positive on LFT yesterday morning but negative PCR text through this morning.

I felt very uncomfortable. Is this happening elsewhere? I googled but can only find stuff from the October lab fuck up!

That is why if you test positive on an lft, then you have a pcr test.

Bigfathairyones · 11/12/2021 17:07

Yep, rare but it happens. I looked it up after we had one through and it's apparently about a 1% chance of a false positive with LFT. This is borne out by my experience at work (I'm sent the results)

Last week I had two positive lateral flows (one very faint, the second darker) but a negative pcr. I felt unwell at the time but not excessively so- more like I had a minor cold- so I presume the pcr was correct. Not sure why I got positive lateral flows. Odd.

cherin · 11/12/2021 17:15

It happened this week to my DS2….his LFT was very very faint, and the PCR that came back today is negative. I’ve done another LFT right after I’ve got the text and it’s clear. His school wants to have at least 2 negative LFT after the PcR anyway, before admitting back to school.
I don’t know if it was a false positive or me misinterpreting the line (we had a debate at home, I could definitely see it, DH was adamant it was too faint to be significant).

CovidCorvid · 11/12/2021 17:16

I know someone who this happened to. They redid the pcr 2days later and it was positive.

PotteringAlong · 11/12/2021 17:18

Yes. This has happened to me. Positive LFT, followed by negative LFT, negative PCR and then multiple negative LFT afterwards

cherin · 11/12/2021 17:19

If I can offer a humble opinion…I don’t know any other Eu country of the ones I generally “deal with” which allows PcR to be done DIY. I think there must be inherent limitations in what you can sample when you do it yourself, or to a child? The PCR in other countries are done with the swab that gets all the way to the “back of the nose” (otherwise known as the “are they poking my brain?” style in my house). I understand how much easier it is to just post a kit or drop it on a passenger seat, but surely there’s a limit to the accuracy of the average person?

This exact same thing happened to me. I had a positive lft followed by two negative pcr tests a few days apart. Test and trace couldn't help explain it either. The brand was flowflex.

ThoseFestiveLights · 11/12/2021 17:29

I think there are some issues with flow flex LFTs - threads on here about it.

I was wondering about reports that some types of pcr can’t detect some types of omicron. There’ve been a few articles about it.

It’s unlikely to be stealth in a lab test but completely detectable in something done at my kitchen table though, surely? If it cannot be detected in a standard quick PCR it’s not going to be detected in a 30 minute lateral flow either.

4 positive lft here. Then 2 unreadable pcr then 2 negative pcr.

My theory is that I had it. False positives are quite rare. I had 4. I'm going with that and have isolated accordingly

HeadPain · 12/12/2021 01:19

Happened to me ages ago. Faint LFT positive , did another LFT was negative, went for a PCR anyway was negative, did a LFT again a couple days later, very very faint positive again ... Confused

Notagardener · 12/12/2021 01:33

Didn't think false pos rate of LFT is higher than false neg PCR

scrivette · 12/12/2021 01:44

I had a positive twice on LFT's and both times negative PCR's - same batch of LFT's.

VanillaIce1 · 12/12/2021 02:26

My son was negative on a ltf Friday. Dark postive Monday and Tuesday PCR tested came back positive by Tuesday afternoon negative, tested him every day twice a day since then to check and it's negative every single time. Doesn't make any sense

If your PCR is positive, I think you isolate from when symptoms started, not the day if the test. First day of symptoms is day zero.
