So do I have hardly any protection?

I went for my second Pfizer jab last Saturday.
Have had many months of worrying about getting the jab but felt happy and settled in my mind that at least I have had my twojabs now and within a few weeks should have a good level of protection until around March/April when I will get the booster.
I genuinely thought that the booster shots were for the vulnerable and elderly and those who had their 2nd a good many months ago and protection has probably waned hence the need for a ‘booster’ shot.
And then yesterday’s headlines hit.
Where does that leave people like me? I can’t have a booster a week after the second shot.
So do I now have to worry and stress about only having around 30% protection against omicron?
I honestly thought the ‘booster’ was just that, to top up and boost the protection from the spring/summer jabs.
Do the boosters have something in them which has protection against the Omicron variant and how come if they were developed before this new variant was discovered only weeks ago.
Can someone with a more scientific head enlighten me as I will just stress too much without a clearer picture, thank you.

Remmy123 do you think? I have awful anxiety and it took me ages to pluck up the courage to have my 2nd shot. Feel like I’ve gone straight back to the beginning!

I don't understand why people say it's scaremongering to get people to have boosters.

What is in it for the government to get people to have the booster if it doesn't help? Honest question.

BrightonOrLancaster · 11/12/2021 11:30

You getting your second now is the same as a double jabbed person getting their third now.

the80sweregreat · 11/12/2021 11:31

People believe it's just the big pharmaceutical companies wanting to increase their profits and pushing the boosters.
It's NOT what I think , but it's this kind of misinformation that doesn't help.
Very difficult.

getsanta · 11/12/2021 11:33

@the80sweregreat ah, thought that must be it.

Twoweekcruise · 11/12/2021 11:33

getsanta some are saying the government are benefiting financially from the vaccine companies. I don’t know what to believe anymore tbh.
BrightonOrLancaster thanks, that is what I had thought but the Daily Fail would have us believe that only those triple jabbed are fully protected and the rest of us are fucked.

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 11/12/2021 11:35

Apparently astra zenica gives zero protection against omicron im wondering just how they know this so fast 🤔

PinkPlantCase · 11/12/2021 11:35

I thought the 30% protection was based on it being 6 months from your 2nd jab. So OP you should have more more than 30%!!

Also the stats are based on protection against symptomatic infection. So it still could be more than 30% effective against severe illness

Twoweekcruise · 11/12/2021 11:36

PinkPlantCase that is what I had thought too. I need to step away from the Daily Mail!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/12/2021 11:37

Could be worse, OP. I got Astra Zeneca so supposedly no protection at all!

Whilst undoubtedly individuals are benefitting from the increase in share price of Pfizer et al, the Gov is paying them £15 per dose. Plus the cost of actually physically vaccinating people. It's costing the Gov billions and billions. This will be like when the NHS was set up just after the war. We'll be paying the costs of covid vaccinations, and furlough etc for the next 60 years. The Gov is categorically NOT making money from this.
Twoweekcruise · 11/12/2021 11:48

TheYearOfSmallThings several of my friends are in the same position but can’t get a booster as they are fully booked in our area, what a nightmare. Are you able to get your booster?
titchy exactly, I don’t believe this story but I know several do! I’ve told my teen kids that unfortunately they will be paying for this in their taxes for many, many years to come. Just like we have with the cost of the war.

LethargicActress · 11/12/2021 11:48

The boosters people are being given are exactly the same as the Pfizer shot you were given last Saturday. You don’t need a booster yet, because your second vaccine hasn’t even had time to give you its full protection, let alone wear off. The booster is because the effects of the first vaccines don’t last long enough, but you had one of your first vaccines recently enough that that isn’t a concern for you.

Its hype.
I dont believe the headlines at all.

How can they know categorically?

They cant and they dont.

DM is just trying to sell views on their news pages.

The government wants to get its sleaze off the front page.

As well as the fact they want to increase booster jabs.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/12/2021 11:52

Are you able to get your booster?

Actually I got it yesterday OP (Moderna) - availability is really good in East London because so many people are dodging the vaccine.

So today I have a sore arm, but soon I will be invincible Grin

@Theunamedcat

Becauase they did data on the South African cases and saw the correlation between illness outcome and vaccine. AZ offers no new variant protection. Not a conspiracy just scientific investigation.

titchy · 11/12/2021 11:55

@BluebellsGreenbells

I disagree. The government brought shares in all vaccines so they reap the rewards from the sales abroad.
Hmm Where do get that from - Facebook or twitter?
Janeandjohnny · 11/12/2021 11:55

Your second shot will give you about 30% more protection at this point if your vax was Pfizer. Booster in a few months will help against Omiricon.
Theunamedcat · 11/12/2021 11:55

I didnt say it was a conspiracy 🙄

WombatChocolate · 11/12/2021 11:56

I guess the reality is that people who got their jabs when they were first availability to them and are fully up-to-date are more protected. Those who have delayed and are only just getting their first or second won’t be quite so well protected.

Apparently lots who didn’t get jabbed are now worried and want it. This includes people being admitted to hospital who ask for it when they are gasping for breath….but it’s too late for the jab then. There was a big article on BBC site about that.

The time gaps between jabs and boosters has been reduced, so people can ‘catch up’ but it still takes time.

The reality is that those who didn’t take jabs when offered will be less protected.

Adults who are 3 months post jab should now be able to go for a walk-in booster. But if people are only just getting their 2nd jab, despite it being available for months, will have to wait 12 weeks.

All you can now do is to get the jabs as soon as you are eligible and to maintain social distancing where possible. This really applies to everyone at this stage.

Correct. I didnt say you did! Sorry if it came across as if I infered that. It was very fast for them to do the data because the variant is so concerning. @Theunamedcat
OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 11/12/2021 12:04

The thing with anything new is we learn more about our all the time. It looks more as though the vaccine is a 3 jab course to build up protection. This isn't unusual amongst vaccines and there are others that require multiple shots. We also need to remember that the vaccine reduces the chance of serious illness, it does not stop you getting it completely.

This information may change again in the future as we learn more about how the immunity wanes over time and as new variants emerge.

Having had 2 jabs is great and gives you a good level of protection and greatly reduces your chance of complications should you get covid.
