School asking for Covid passports for a school play

Nahhh · 09/12/2021 19:14

We had a letter sent home yesterday to say that in order to go to the school Christmas play we need to present a Covid passport.

We’ve also been told that we must provide evidence as to why we are exempt from mask wearing of this is the case.

As it happens I’m fine to present my Covid passport, I’ve had 2 jabs plus a booster but my reason for not wearing a mask is deeply private and traumatic and not something I’ve even spoken to my GP about.

I just feel like the school is pushing the boundaries on privacy a little when these things aren’t required legally at this stage. Is this the kind of thing we are going to have to put up with now?

That would be unlawful.

Can you imagine if a supermarket banned people with visual impairments?

Blanket ban on people who use wheelchair?

Perhaps just think that idea through?

HereComesSpringAgain · 09/12/2021 22:22

nobody suggesting banning wheelchair users or those with visual impairments though?

gogohm · 09/12/2021 22:28

Look at it from their perspective - how can they tell which parents are genuinely exempt and which don't agree with being told what to do? I was told quite openly at the shop I work at that the reason a (older) mother and (30 something) son weren't wearing masks was because it's all a conspiracy and no politician is telling them what to do, they advised me that lanyards were only £1 from Amazon. All along it should have been no mask exemption unless certified by a medical practitioner eg gp, consultant or psychiatrist, in other countries this is the case

@gogohm sick people can’t get appointments with their GPs and there are massive backlogs. I’m not sure that requiring people to get certificates from any of them is a viable option.

I’ve had countless appointments with my gp in recent months abs appointments have always been available for the whole family when there’s an urgent need. Other times phone appointments have been necessary.

We can also make admin requests online so this wouldn’t have to take up gp appointments time.

That is not even the point in this case.
OP has said she has a very traumatic and private reason that she can not wear a mask... that her GP is not aware of. It can take months of therapy for someone to talk about such things. Yet OP can just call her GP and tell the receptionist. I don't think so!

It’s just like everything else. The minority who abuse the system cause problems for others. I went into a petrol station and 3 young blokes got out of a scaffolding truck and all went in unmasked. What’s the likelihood of them all being exempt? Almost zero. Went into subway, 5 people in queue, 4 unmasked. Again very unlikely to all be exempt.

bumbleymummy · 10/12/2021 01:15

@ChilliGoat well I’m pleased to hear that you haven’t struggled to get appointments/callbacks. Surely you can appreciate that other people have not had the same experience though? The GP issues/backlog are pretty widely publicised.

@XenoBitch oh I agree that it’s an unreasonable request anyway - just pointing out that it wouldn’t be such an easy thing to get.

ArdoCycle · 10/12/2021 06:07

If this wasn’t made up to create froth I’d just say why not just tell them you have asthma or something, use some common sense. If you have a valid reason not to wear it then don’t - why does it matter if you say it was because of some past trauma or a lung condition. Grow up.

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 10/12/2021 07:28

Only thing I wondered a bit was during prior mask mandate, what did op do. My dc's school had strict mask mandate, parents couldn't enter school building without wearing a mask.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 10/12/2021 07:34

Why would you not want to help prevent the spread of covid to teachers at school ?

Fleur405 · 10/12/2021 08:16

My yoga studio has a rule that you must take your shoes off in the outer hall and not enter the studio with shoes on. There is no legal rule about wearing shoes in yoga studios but they are still perfectly entitled to make that a condition of entering their property providing it’s not discriminatory (in the sense of protected characteristics.

It’s really not the same as a supermarket banning visually impaired people (which is unlawful discrimination).

morticiamarkle · 10/12/2021 14:10

@trumpisagit

The school are doing their best to stop it being a spreading event. They are trying to discourage those who choose to not wear a mask. I would be in favour of the more "mandatory" mask wearing that we have in the rest of Europe, if the rest of us have to wear one.
Yes but you should not do that by breaking the law. Which they are.

Thinking you have the moral high ground does not mean (1) you actually have it (2) you are above the law

kittensinthekitchen · 10/12/2021 14:56

@morticiamarkle

Which law is that, specifically?

It would be the same if they denied entry to a person with medical/disability reasons for someone to wear footwear all the time they were weight bearing or denied mobility aids such as crutches/ wheelchairs because they'd been outside.

Exactly.

And be grateful you are getting a Christmas performance - my child's were all cancelled weeks ago after a big outbreak 😭
