When did you test positive if a contact?

My dc tested positive on LFT confirmed by PCR on Sunday. So far I haven't had symptoms and am testing negative on LFT. I wondered if anyone else tested positive when someone in your household had it and if so at what point in their isolation period did you get it?

Obviously I'm pleased not to have it but it will be really annoying to test positive on say day 9 of dc isolation and have to start the whole thing again!

I tested positive the day after DS did. Other household members didn’t test positive at any point.

ChristmasCovid · 09/12/2021 14:29

As a contact you should really take a pcr - you may be asymptomatic.
The average incubation following contact is 5 days but can be up to 10 (14 in rare cases)

matildathebookworm · 09/12/2021 14:30

@ChristmasCovid I will take a PCR if I start experiencing symptoms but at this stage what's the point? I may test negative and then pick it up from my dc the next day as we are living together. As it stands I'm not going far anyway. Just popping to the shop for essentials and testing everyday.

Dh tested positive yesterday, 8 days after dd did. I’m still negative at the moment but not holding out much hope now that I’ll avoid it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/12/2021 14:49

DS tested positive 6 days after me.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/12/2021 14:51

That was on a PCR though, LFT didn't pick it up in either of our cases. If I was living in a house with a confirmed case I'd get a PCR, I wouldn't rely on the LFTs which are often inaccurate.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 09/12/2021 14:55

DS tested negative on pcr initially but developed symptoms on day 5.
2 of my close friends have caught it from their children and have tested positive on day 7.
That was in 2 separate families.

Paddingtonthebear · 09/12/2021 14:56

I tested positive 5 days after my husband did. Didn’t pass it on to DD though

Rainbowsandstorms · 09/12/2021 14:57

You really need to take a pcr as a household contact. LFTs don’t always pick it up. I know a number of households who have had one person test positive and other family members test negative on LFT but positive on pcr, they have gone on to have symptoms with the exception of a few children but by taking a pcr test they have identified the infection early which has minimised onwards spread.

kickupafuss · 09/12/2021 15:00

I could be wrong but doesn't a PCR detect it at an earlier stage? I thought that's why you're supposed to get a PCR if you are a close contact.

My DD tested positive on LFT on Sunday confirmed by PCR. I was negative on Sunday and had a positive lateral flow yesterday morning confirmed by PCR. I did a postal PCR on Tuesday but haven't had the results of that yet.

sociallydistained · 09/12/2021 15:07

In two cases the kids I look after tested initially negative as a contact (2 days after) but tested positive on day 5. Keep lateral flowing and do another pcr too.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 09/12/2021 15:08

Siblings in my school seem to be about 5 or 6 days

BeckyB1983 · 09/12/2021 15:12

My 8 year old tested positive last Monday then my husband and I tested positive on the Wednesday. My sons last day of isolation is today and ours is Sunday. My 1 year old has not picked it up from any of us! We test him every 3 days on lateral flow. It's madness. 9 year old no symptoms, me mild symptoms but my husband has a bad cough and now a chest infection.

StringersBell · 09/12/2021 15:18

DP tested positive on PCR on the Thursday, I was negative on PCR and daily LFTs up until the Monday (I’d started developing symptoms Sunday night). DC was negative on both PCRs and subsequent daily LFTs until the following Sundar/Monday - so it was quite a while til their symptoms developed. Annoying as we are now free and D.C. is still in isolation for another week

sunlovingcriminal · 09/12/2021 15:18

When my ds tested positive I took 3 pcrs over the course of his isolation. 1 the day directly after his positive test, 1 halfway through his isolation, and 1 a couple of days after his isolation had ended. He is older though so was able to isolate in his bedroom, and as a household the rest of us managed to avoid coming down with it.

GypsyWanderer · 09/12/2021 15:24

The first time around just one of us out of 6 had covid and nobody else caught it. This time around (on Monday) 2 of the kids had positive lft’s on the same day (1 has been confirmed with a pcr and we’re waiting on results from the other) and so far nobody else has had a positive lft.

Userno63637348 · 09/12/2021 15:34

Dp was a close contact at work last wednesday, tested positive Sunday! So far the rest of our house is negative despite that he hasn't really been isolating away. So I am wondering the same!

mrsdolittle · 09/12/2021 15:49

I had a close contact at work on Tuesday and Wednesday last week. She tested positive on LFT on Thursday (confirmed by PCR)

I did a PCR Friday - negative. But by Sunday evening I had symptoms and was confirmed positive by PCR on Monday.

So I would say about 4/5 days after contact in my case

GypsyWanderer · 09/12/2021 16:02

I spoke too soon. Another DS just tested positive. So that’s 3 full days between. That means all 4 of the kids have had it, just me and DH to go.

matildathebookworm · 09/12/2021 16:05

If I can avoid it altogether it would be great but if I'm going to get it I'd rather it be soon so we can combine our isolation and hopefully be good for Christmas.

We can't isolate ds completely as we only have one bathroom but he is spending a lot of time in his room and I'm wearing a mask when I go in to see him. Still sitting and watching TV together in the evenings just keeping the windows open.

It's so rubbish. I feel really sorry for him (and us) missing so many lovely December plans.

DC both tested positive last Thursday of LFT confirmed by PCR on Friday. My PCR was negative. DH and I have done LFTs daily and so far negative. Will be really frustrating if we test positive in the next few days. We’ve had the windows open in all rooms all day everyday and wore masks when close to the kids but they’ve spent a lot of time in different rooms.

The point is that you are recommended to take a PCR if you are a close contact.

LFTs are just not sensitive enough and numerous people report negative LFT but positive PCR.

matildathebookworm · 09/12/2021 16:22

@ChristmasCovid I understand that but the time lapse in getting PCR results makes it pretty pointless. I could go for a PCR then come home and catch it off ds straight away but my results a few days later would still be negative. I could literally pick it up at any time since I live with him and unlike LFT I can't take a PCR every single day.

Nevertheless I do plan on getting one but I just don't see how it can be accurate in this situation. If I developed symptoms I absolutely would but at the moment there's nothing.

All of that is true of course.

Or you could have it currently and be asymptomatic- The average incubation is 5 days following exposure so right now would probably a good time to do a time to do one.

Hope you stay negative.
