Odds of getting Covid after exposure

Just wondering if anyone can give me an idea of how likely it is to get Covid after being exposed. I took my little boy to accident and emergency last night on the advice of 111. He has a cough but got a negative PCR two days ago. We were out in the waiting area reserved for patients with Covid- I assume because he had a cough. I didn't actually realise that was what had happened because there was no signage and it wasn't explained to me. Only cottoned on when I was chatting to another mum in there who told me her small daughter who she had brought in had Covid confirmed by PCR.

I'm now wondering what the chances are that we've caught it Sad the little girl was sitting probably a couple of metres from us and was coughing a lot. I'd estimate we were in there for about an hour. I'm doubled vaxxed but DS is only 3 so hasn't been vaccinated, I'm mainly concerned because he is already quite unwell with another infection so it seems like a really bad time to catch it. Thanks!

Also, does anyone know how soon after exposure we should do a PCR test? I'm keeping DS away from the childminder, one of the other mums who uses my provider is very medically vulnerable so I'm keen to make sure he's in the clear first.

Good grief OP. Imagine them sending you with a sick child to sit in a covid waiting roomConfused

On news last night they were saying incubation time for omicron seems to be between 3-8 days. Think that's slightly less than for delta. You're already on day 2 so I would probably test in another 2 or 3 days unless you or he develops symptoms sooner.

Hope your DS feels better soonThanks

Thanks so much. That document looks reassuring. DS is looking much brighter now so hopefully we don't get a bout of Covid!

Me and my dc were in a room face to face and talking for hours with 2 people who had covid a few weeks ago (didn't find out until a couple of days later. I did LFTs every 3 days, and a PCR on day 12 but none of us caught it, so it's definitely not inevitable you'll catch it.

Over 50% of my DC's class had Covid two weeks ago and they didn't catch it, despite obviously being exposed daily and in very close contact

We were all living without isolating from DS13 when he caught it in October and the 5 of us didn’t catch it. And 3 boys share a room together. his brother and sister have it now but nobody rose has caught it yet although we’re only on day 4. But it definitely isn’t a given that you’ll catch it.

One child has covid at the moment. The rest of us (4) members of the household are all negative.

Husband caught covid, tested positive with pcr. Noone else (3 of us)caught it, and I was sleeping in the bed next to him until he tested positive

DH was working very closely with someone at work. They're engineers, so there was a lot of reaching around each other to grab things, passing tools, etc.

Colleague tested positive the day after, but DH never got it.

Thanks everyone, this is all very reassuring! Fingers crossed we are lucky 😁
