Two questions about the booster

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/12/2021 20:16

I'm booked in for my booster on Sunday. I've read online that you shouldn't have alcohol for a few days before or 2 weeks afterwards. Has anyone been told that? I'm out on Saturday so will have a couple of drinks and I really do not want to not drink over Christmas!

Secondly, does anyone know if I can take aspirin after the booster? If I get a headache or any other aches and pains it's the only thing that actually works, paracetamol is pointless.

Thanks in advance

I’ve not been told that for any of my three jabs.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/12/2021 20:19

Thank you.

I've read my post back and realised it makes me sound a bit desperate for a drink! I honestly don't drink that much!

No I haven't been told to avoid alcohol after any of my vaccines. The 2 I've had have been on a Saturday and no way was I not having my usual couple of drinks. I imagine your usual pain relief will be ok

Lushplease · 08/12/2021 20:23

It would be publicly announced and we'd all know about it if you needed to abstain.
Same with the asprin- if it wasn't ok we would know.

HeronLanyon · 08/12/2021 20:27

I think I vaguely remember the alcohol advice for my first jab. I even think I did not drink fir a bit before and after (not two weeks!). However I didn’t do this fir second or for booster nor was I told nor does the leaflet I was given for either say anything about no alcohol afterwards.

Largethighsbadeyes · 08/12/2021 20:29

I specifically asked at my 2nd jab as I'd read the alcohol thing on mumsnet.

The doctor who gave me the jab said it was nonsense. He said go home and enjoy a glass or 2.

One of those mums net myths I think.

CouldThisReallyBe · 08/12/2021 20:32

I had my booster last Saturday; was out Friday night (2 glasses of wine), was out Saturday night (2 glasses of wine). I had a sore arm after the jab, and a mild headache for a day (undoubtedly from the wine not the booster Grin).

Oh and I took pre-emptive paracetomol immediately after the jab and was fine.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/12/2021 20:33

Thanks all. Like I said I'm not desperate, but might need a drink between now and Christmas now I'll be working from home full time!

Booze is fine, though I'd go easy the day before and few days after the jab. Aspirin is a blood thinner, the minor thrombocytopenia risk means that personally I'd avoid it in that initial few weeks after vaccination. Do you get on with ibuprofen instead if you need something? I just got boosted today and no headache, just a sore arm.

Lifeispassingby · 08/12/2021 20:38

DH just had his booster and was told not to drink that day. He also takes aspirin daily and that isn’t a problem apparently x

Cookerhood · 08/12/2021 20:44

I'm a vaccinator & this isn't official advice. People often ask me if they can drink & I tell them they may not feel like it that night & not to go mad, but that there's no real reason not to.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/12/2021 20:44

@MRex, ibuprofen doesn't touch a headache for me unfortunately. It's amazing when my back goes (god I sound like an old crock!) but Anadin Extra is the only thing that will shift a headache. Fingers crossed I don't get a headache!

@Lifeispassingby thanks for that. It'll be Monday when I'll probably need a drink as it's my first day back at work after a week off!

OP posts:
MRex · 08/12/2021 20:55

@PinkSparklyPussyCat - if you need it then it'll most likely be fine, it's never been listed to be avoided I'm just over-cautious. Do you know what causes your headaches to try to avoid triggers? Drinking lots of water is the obvious one, but also I'm intolerant to blue light so getting more natural light and warm lights rather than strip lights helps.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/12/2021 21:01

It's usually stress, working too long or hormonal. I'm back at work after a week off so I'm liable to be pretty stressed if it's anything like last time I was off! I've also got some meetings coming up that will stress me out but I can't get out of them. I just need to try and relax!

Panacotta · 08/12/2021 21:56

You are fine to drink & take aspirin op!

gogohm · 08/12/2021 21:59

Wasn't mentioned at all, I was at the pub about 3 hours after my booster!

SLH2003 · 08/12/2021 22:01

I've got booster on Wednesday and getting smashed on Thursday.

People love to tell you not to drink.

There is no hypothesis that says the vaccine wont be effective with alcohol.

I don't know about aspirin (it is a blood thinner) but analgesics are recommended for post-vaccine side effects.

SpamIAm · 08/12/2021 22:26

I actually was told to avoid alcohol at my first jab last month (Pfizer). Certainly not two weeks though!

dementedpixie · 08/12/2021 22:44

I asked at my first jab and they said just to have plenty of mixers with my vodka as you should have lots of fluids after the injection!

Gladioli23 · 08/12/2021 22:47

Re the headaches: i sometimes get them, and honestly I can take paracetamol and ibuprofen and them not help but the glass of wine I then have just works wonders. My doctor friend reckons I am getting a headache caused by vasoconstriction and the alcohol fixes it: might be worth a try if you don't want to take aspirin!

Viviennemary · 08/12/2021 22:54

First I've heard of it. It would be on the letter. It isn't.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/12/2021 08:26

Thanks all. It was advice from a charity website and just made me think.

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

Thank you.

I've read my post back and realised it makes me sound a bit desperate for a drink! I honestly don't drink that much!

That made me laugh.

I had a gin and tonic after my first one (I was feeling really stressed about the idea of putting Covid in my arm having done my best to avoid it ever since the first pandemic – scientifically I know you're not really putting Covid in your arm but it just felt like the last thing I wanted to do was be anywhere near that bloody thing!).
So I needed that G&T!

I even told the nurse when she asked me what I will be doing later that evening after my jab and she said, "take it easy" - but she didn't say "no don't drink at all" – so I guess it is okay (although probably not strictly advisable).

Just had my booster a few days ago and have had (relatively small amounts of) wine since to no bad affect as far as I can say...
