Probably stupid question about Omnicron…

If I have just had covid (not omnicron but one of the other variants) will I still have some natural immunity against the Omnicron variant?

No one is really sure yet, omicron is still under observation.

I think the confirmed reinfection rate observed with other strains is very low (less than 2%) so even a headline stating omicron is 3x as likely to reinfect still gives a very low chance of reinfection. Those are very broad, off the top of my head percentages so I’m happy to be corrected/clarified.

On an individual level they’re not bad odds, on a population level it’s a bit more of an issue. Particularly if it’s fast moving.

I would say “yes” however no one can guarantee how much because it varies from person to person and depends on a variant.
Also I’ve got impression that the amount of viral load does matter so you might be ok for a small viral load but a big one might re-infect you.

You will have a better immunity if you have been vaccinated as well as having had covid OP.

shouldistop · 07/12/2021 09:08

Probably. And immunity will be even better if you're vaccinated

Gearedtoyou · 07/12/2021 09:13

No one knows yet, that's why we're having this "wait and see" period but the consensus seems to be "probably".

This sounds fairly promising, thank you!

I have been double vaccinated (Pfizer), with my last one being in July. Currently have covid!

Are you going to have the booster after a month OP? Lots of my friends who are double vaccinated and have had Covid recently are wondering whether to have the booster or not.
On the one hand, anything to fight off another Covid infection, on the other hand what is the point if the booster may not work optimally anyway and may have to have a second generation vaccine in 6 months.

I’m not sure! I haven’t looked into it yet. It’s food for thought, definitely.

This is exactly what they don’t know yet, I think

Likely to be something rather than nothing, but might just be a little bit

The large number of mutations in the spike protein are expected to significantly increase omicron's ability to bypass immunity compared to delta, leading to more covid reinfections.

But I haven't seen anyone suggesting that omicron will be able to bypass immunity from prior infection entirely.
