One in eight people hospitalised with Covid suffer heart damage

Given the amount of people that have been hospitalised, there are real concerns about the future pressures this could put on cardiac services as well as the impact on individuals quality of life.

My dad had a cardiac arrest 5days after his second vaccine. Never been diagnosed with any heart problems. We also believe he new he was dying,he was just 62.

Nyfluff · 07/12/2021 06:00

My cardiologist believes my problems now were likely caused by Covid. This was before I had 2x AZ. I was given Pfizer in hospital and told that having Covid or existing heart complications is not contraindicated for the vaccine and that heart issues from the Vaccine only happen to young men.

I've had palpitations and more arrhythmia since Pfizer and feel quite unwell but not sure if I should do anything as nobody was bothered at how ill i've been recently. The vaccinator simply asked my name and if I wanted my flu jab as well and didn't speak another word. I've been up all night with palpitations, back, neck and chest pain.

It is a great pity thatba thread that was intended to highlight the cardiac issues of the actual disease has been hujacked.

OP: I think it shows how people don't want to think about the full consequences of the disease, nor about how it affects so many organs and systems of the body.

For example, all virus infections could cause a stroke, but it's rare. For covid it is up to 6% and that's in young people (source, JAMA) which is over 7x the rate for flu

Link to CDC study. 1 in 8 - the same amount of hospitalised flu patients developed serious heart complications.

DH had myocarditis when he was 30, from flu. He was lucky in that he was only left with a small amount of damage to his heart which has never affected him day to day. At least now people are becoming more aware of it.

He was diagnosed with cancer pre covid, and is on chemo every 2 weeks. Has had 2 AZ, and a 3rd Pfizer with no side effects whatsoever.

@HelloNeighbour2021

About two years before the pandemic began, my mother died of a heart attack having never had any previous heart problems.

When things like this happen we all want something to blame for it but In your fathers case, the vaccine timing is just a coincidence.

Yes. A colleague got covid right at the beginning of all this. It became long covid and she has developed supra ventricular tachycardia. She is quite young and has had a terrible time with several emergency admissions to hospital. She can no longer work.

HidingFromDD · 07/12/2021 09:27

Sadly heart damage is also a side effect of flu. I had covid v early and suffered significant arrhythmia following for a number of months. It seems to have settled down (fingers crossed) and I’ve had 2xaz and Pfizer booster.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 07/12/2021 09:44

Yeah my FIL died of a sudden heart attack aged 57. Pre COVID. Sadly it happens. Unfortunately COVID will make it far more frequent.

SamhainToImbolc · 07/12/2021 09:53

I've also been having heart problems. We (DH & I) had covid last year.

Have been vaccinated (Pfizer) but I don't think it was the vaccine that caused my heart problems. I think it is long covid.

I saw my gp in September for weird palpitations, skipping beats and feeling breathless and very tired and I had had a month of upset stomachs, with diarrhoea. She sent me for an x-ray which didn't show anything and did the usual tests for bowel cancer to rule that out.

I've had an ECG and a 24 hour monitor and an echocardiogram to try to get to the bottom of what's been going on. It's been a difficult year with significant change to my eyesight too.

Lots of viruses cause cardiac problems, hence why you should not exercise with a fever.

Rheumatic fever causes disease of the heart valves.

1 in 1000 pregnancies cause a cardiomyothapy in the mother.

julieca · 07/12/2021 10:21

That is true. But there has been a lot of scientific discussion as to whether covid is a respiratory disease or a cardiovascular one. It is not the same as other respiratory illnesses.
