A few weeks ago my son had a cough and fever. He got a very faint positive lft. Did a pcr and it was negative. He had to go get checked in hospital and was pretty unwell.

He's been back at school a week and his cough had pretty much gone.
Now it's worse again and he's back to having trouble breathing on and off. Having an inhaler. No fever.
His lft is negative but obviously if this is a new cough he'll need a new test.

Is this overkill? Are the school going to be really fed up with me keeping him off?
Feels like I never know what to do for the best these days.

Please be kind. I'm just doubting myself because I also volunteer there and have to keep missing sessions. When I phone they're often seeming put out so I'm not sure if others aren't being so strict.

No its not overkill. You are following government guidelines. Also if he is having trouble breathing he will get very tired and is probably better at home anyway.

If your child has a new cough, you will need to follow the rules and test him.

I would definitely make a gp appointment tomorrow, if he remains stable tonight. If it is bothering his breathing, maybe he needs a medication or dose change?

A child who is struggling to breathe needs to be taken to a&e.

I think you're right to be careful. It's protecting others and preventing/reducing chance of class outbreaks (we had one last month). Especially with Omicron now too.

It's not overkill, coughs are horrid and little kids often get one after another. Dd has had 2 coughs in the last month and all negative pcr results. Half her class are coughing too! It goes then she gets another. Schools don't mind though. If they do mention it, remind them we are in a pandemic!

Thanks all, I'm glad I'm not being OTT. Feels like everyone is puzzled as to why I'm being careful.
His breathing is nowhere near how it was last time, I won't hesitate to take him if its bad.
Once he's had his inhaler and sat still he's fine but he does need me reminding him. I'll speak to the doctor tomorrow I think anyway and just check about his inhaler.

I hope he feels better soon.

Thank you!
I've woken up with a cough too and so has my 1 year old so all 3 of us are having tests.

The school were fine about it thankfully. Apparently they've had people not letting them know their positive results.

Sorry to hear you are all feeling ill now. Hope you all feel better soon.
And yes awful that some are not telling school about positive tests.

Niki14 · 06/12/2021 13:07

Its definitely not overkill! My DD tested positive this morning after catching it from school. Fortunately, we were doing daily LFTs as pretty much her entire class is now covid positive but she is completely asymptomatic (surprising as she is also asthmatic). Its sounds like its caused chaos at school and we are now all sat at home waiting for PCR results which means 2 frontline workers are now out of action. You are doing the right thing. If cases suddenly run through school I'm fairly sure they'll quickly change their attitude!
