Vitamin c, zinc, a good multi vitamin and probiotic. I make a drink out of fresh squeezed oranges, honey, turmeric and hot water to help my immune system. Lots of fruit and veg, green juices, fresh air and exercise these are my go to things and I am never really ill. Also haven’t had covid despite not hiding away from it at all.

C, Zinc, D3

FinallyHere · 05/12/2021 19:52

There are two things I associate with convalescence, home made chicken soup and freshly squeezed orange juice with hot water and honey.

Im sure they make me feel so much better because they remind me of being ill as a child and how well my mother would look after me as much as the actual food.

Is there any food for which you have similar memories ?

A friend who used to eat really very healthily indeed used to crave Heinz tomato soup and Jacob's creme crackers, because that was her childhood memory.

XenoBitch · 05/12/2021 19:54

Anything rich in vitamin C.
I find when I am about to come down with a lurgy, I really crave orange juice.

I have memories of my neighbours sat out in the garden, wrapped up in blankets every time there was some sunshine, during first lockdown. That might have been to stop them breathing on the rest of their families.

We caught Covid in the summer, very mildly, so mooching about in the garden was easy to do.

So, alongside a bit of fresh air and vitamin D, I'll throw in elderberry syrup. It's great for easing colds/boosting your immune system.

I also reckon on broth/miso soup with plenty of garlic/ginger/chilli (add some veg like shredded carrot and greens and noodles and maybe some meat if you are up to it).

Don't underestimate the benefits of a bit more sleep/rest too.

Niacin (B5) is known to reduce severity of COVID, it's why smokers have a lower fatality rate.
But take as a b-complex with highest dose you can find - water soluble. Vitamin C also good for healing - can take in high doses, but at least 3g spread over the day.

TheVolturi · 05/12/2021 20:16

I'd just have some fresh fruit and healthy choices, be careful with vitamin c fizzy tablet things, they can give you upset stomach. Metatone tonic can be good to perk you up as well.

hamstersarse · 05/12/2021 20:23

Just avoid inflammatory foods completely.

And D3 with K2 (needed to absorb the D3) and vit C and Zinc

And of course, good quality sleep

hamstersarse · 05/12/2021 20:25

@Taciturn

I had a high dose niacin once…it was terrifying. The ‘flush’ lasted for ages and was like a prickly heat.

Think I’ll stick to red meat sources in the future 😅

Strangevipers · 05/12/2021 20:53

Energy drinks

Niacin is B3 and not B5.... take the non-flush version, it helps immensely with fatigue. Other than that... zinc, Vit D+K2, liposomal vit C, quercetin, NAC and high doses of Allicin Max also help. Buy good quality vits, none of the bulking agent and additive packed tablet versions. Drink bone broth or chicken soup, eliminate white sugar and carbs from your diet during this time. Keep away from mucus-producing foods such as dairy products, banana and seafood.

When we had a Covid case in the house (DS) I took high dose vitamin C, always take vitamin D in the winter anyway so carried on. Quercitin, NAC. Lots of gut friendly foods to help with immune system. So kefir/kombucha.

kefir I'd be wary of as it's dairy and it increases mucus, instead try sauerkraut

These are all the best suggestions! Thank you. Feels like if there was ever a time to try and think about a good diet and proper supplements for recovery it's now. @perfectSmiles3 I'm not sure what you mean about good quality vitamins? Is there any obvious place to try and find these? I'd normally just get them from supermarket or a regular health food shop! Any hints is tips here appreciated lots!! Thanks so much everyone for sharing your wisdom

We use these D3/K2. D3 4000iu Plus Vitamin K2... [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07YDCVX3G?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_shar&tag=mumsnetforu03-21e]]

A lot more expensive than the ones in the supermarket

Amazon does sell a lot of quality versions of vits

hamstersarse · 05/12/2021 21:52

Energy drinks
Definitely not energy drinks btw.

If you need some sugar….raw honey not this travesty to nutrition.,

ruthietoothie · 05/12/2021 22:03

Thank you @hamstersarse it's tricky when not familiar with what makes good vitamins (if that makes sense). Does something like this look ok for vit c and zinc? www.amazon.co.uk/Vitamin-Strength-Elderberry-Turmeric-Curcumin/dp/B08LP53Z7K/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?rnid=419157031&crid=1OSLQ1S2EEDZ8&keywords=liposomal+vit+c+zinc&rps=1&sprefix=liposomal+vit+c+zinc%2Caps%2C87&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1638741659&refinements=p_76%3A419158031&sr=8-8

If you a rethinking your diet, have a read of this article by Tim Spector (the scientist who tweaked a lot of the things they were doing to create the Zoe app):

joinzoe.com/post/tim-spector-gut-tips

Once you realise that you can include nuts and herbs it isn't too bad.

ruthietoothie · 06/12/2021 16:41

@madcats this is a great read. Thanks so so much for sharing it. I need to up my probiotic game
