Trying to cancel holiday

Tidyhousefornow · 05/12/2021 13:22

I booked though On The Beach and we are due to fly to Tenerife in one week.

I cannot get through to them to move the holiday, lines are closed. It doesn't look like I can cancel.

Does anybody know whether I'll be successful in moving the dates?

I have the same problem with a BA holiday. Cannot contact them in any way.

Bobholll · 05/12/2021 14:19

Why are you cancelling/moving? If this is just because of your worries with omicron, I doubt it’ll go your way. Unfortunately, there are no legal restrictions on travel to Spain, I doubt holiday companies will willingly cancel holidays just because you are worried. They are massive business who desperately need the money right now. They’ll be being extremely tight on cancellations. You need to look very hard at your terms & conditions and your holiday insurance to see if you have any wriggle room..

Tidyhousefornow · 05/12/2021 14:27

I'm worried the either one of us will test positive whilst out there and have to isolate in a hotel or Spain will go on the red list and we'll have to isolate in a hotel

That concern was presumably a possibility when you booked it though? Disinclination to travel is a tricky one and you are reliant on the agent’s goodwill to change the booking. Have you tried messaging via Twitter or Facebook?

I very much doubt they will agree to cancel for that reason. That has always been a risk, surely?
Tidyhousefornow · 05/12/2021 16:44

Hopefully I'll be able to move it

Have you read their terms and conditions. A lot of them were quite generous to encourage people to book, but it depends what it says.

idontlikealdi · 05/12/2021 17:04

What does it say in your t&cs? I doubt you'll be able to move it because you don't want to go when technically the holiday can still go ahead.

I’d go and enjoy yourself.

The only thing that has changed is that Om is supposed to be more transmissible. But seemingly it’s not yet get a decent purchase in Europe. Delta was already quite transmissible, and you must have factored that into your plans.

Realistically, you could still very well have gotten symptoms, tested positive and been stuck. (No one would fly you with a definite case, even before.)

Get yourself a decent set of tests that are accurate in your favour. (Hint: LFTs are less likely to spot a positive.) And have a plan for how to make getting a negative result more likely. And take some NHS spares so you can get a heads up if the likely result before you use the real test.

In terms of the added trouble, they ask for evidence of the result. But some just ask for photos, which are easy, and (relatively) hassle free. But others want a video call. (Which with spotty hotel wifi, I would avoid like the plague.)

The worst case scenario is that you get unambiguously or seriously sick out there. But then your are in territory that the new rules don’t affect. For that case, you need to check your travel insurance. Do check though, because some don’t cover much that’s useful. On the other hand, we found that ours just treated you as “getting sick” (no covid special category) and then you get normal and appropriate treatment.

Sorry about the stress. Hope you can enjoy yourselves.

amicissimma · 05/12/2021 17:16

The Canary Islands seem to have free insurance that covers tourists for testing positive for Covid. Does that help?

Watapalava · 05/12/2021 17:22

Actually if they have a standard covid policy you will be able t change on basis that you now have to isolate on return whilst waiting on pcr on day 2

That’s a significant change from when you booked

ArnoldBee · 05/12/2021 17:24

Spain has a royal decree that changes their entry requirements between 1st and 31st December. Basically if you're travelling with a teen you're buggered.

CorrBlimeyGG · 05/12/2021 17:29

that you now have to isolate on return whilst waiting on pcr on day 2

That's not strictly correct. You need to take the test by the end of day 2. You can literally take it at the airport when you land and have the result by the next morning. It would be very difficult to argue that constitutes a significant change.

WhatsitWiggle · 05/12/2021 17:31

@Nateismine best bet if you are travelling in more than 3 weeks is to apply for a voucher online, then use that voucher against a new holiday when things settle down again

Not necessarily, it depends on your flight times. Stansted facility closes at 7pm so no good for us as we are only due to land a few minutes before.
FrownedUpon · 05/12/2021 17:46

On The Beach have a £150 amendment fee. They’re a nightmare company to get hold of at the moment.

gogohm · 05/12/2021 17:54

It was a possibility when you booked, I doubt they will cancel or alter for free unless they specifically offered this. It's why we travelled with TUI, had specific covid guarantees

vera99 · 05/12/2021 18:27

That insurance guarantee is amazing and shows how they want to support holidays come what may. Particularly if you are retired and have the time to stay there if positive. Have just come back from Fuerteventura with Jet2 - the people are super friendly everybody wears masks where they need to and the weather is nice.

Watapalava · 05/12/2021 19:19

All other operators have refunded or allows changes to holidays fee free based on the day 2 pcr

IME travel ocr are never next day - she waited over a week for his result with Tui!

You can get a result in 4 hours at LHR if you are prepared / able to pay.

I'm having trouble with Expedia too. Booked a package and on enquiring about cancelling or moving dates, Expedia saying KLM flights non moveable or refundable. E-ticket from KLM says free changes to dates. Can't get help from either.
