Are you keeping your kids off school yet?

Dc school has had a huge number of cases recently. Almost half the class are off either positive or awaiting results.

Had a PCR test over the weekend (as all parents have been advised were advised to do so on Friday) and we are negative. Precautions have been taken in school with bubbles and deep cleaning. But quite a lot of parents are still saying that they aren't sending their kids back next week even if they are negative because they don't want to ruin Christmas.

My thoughts are that dc have missed enough school already this year but I feel sad they'll be going into an almost empty class. Is anyone else keeping them off at this stage?

No, I'm not keeping dd off school. Covid isn't going anywhere.

Donatella · 05/12/2021 09:26

Nope, because I feel that their education is more important than any party/activity they might miss. Even if they won't be learning much in the last week I feel it sends the wrong message to them about prioritising education. If we have to isolate over Christmas so be it, it's not the end of the world.

mistletoemolly · 05/12/2021 09:26

@ParkheadParadise I think their reasoning is the time of year and the possibility of being ill or haven't to isolate over Christmas. Even though Christmas is 3 weeks away yet Hmm

Maybe the last week before I will not because I’m worried because I don’t want Christmas ruining! X x x

frozendaisy · 05/12/2021 09:27

Wouldn't entertain the idea.

I presume they will have to isolate at some point.

But then we are not batshit and think Christmas is this huge huge cannot be ruined event.

Autumn101 · 05/12/2021 09:28

No, they’ve missed enough school, they love school and being with their friends and the normality it brings

Exactly. Christmas is one day, most plans (apart from going to Church, which I guess most people don't do) can be moved to another day if needed.
Barwell76 · 05/12/2021 09:30

No they have missed so much school already

SushiGo · 05/12/2021 09:30

Christmas is 3 weeks away, there's still two weeks of term left. I would send mine in.

I do understand being nervous if you are particularly vulnerable, but otherwise they have missed too much school at this point to miss more just in case.

kowari · 05/12/2021 09:31

No, only if shut to his year group which is extremely unlikely as he is in an exam year.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 05/12/2021 09:32

Absolutely not. Dc will stay in school till it finishes for Xmas.

This is life now. Covid not going anywhere and we have to live with it. We won't test unless we have symptoms. Most other countries don't continually test healthy people.

SushiGo · 05/12/2021 09:32

also the parent's that are sending their kids in might be keeping quiet about it if so many others are making a big fuss about it - hey won't want to have an argument about it. I bet there'll be lots more kids in school on Monday than you expect.

megletthesecond · 05/12/2021 09:32

No but I'm tempted.
I don't think I can bear us being ill and stuck here over Xmas. I'm torn between DS missing year 10 work or not spending time with family. His sister is very violent and we're going to have family support involved so he needs a break away from this house.

ParkheadParadise · 05/12/2021 09:34

The parents keeping their kids off school are probably the same ones who complained about schools being closed last year.
Dd is going to school it's her Nativity next week and school party. The same as I'm going to the shops, hairdressers, pubs and nights out.

CottonSock · 05/12/2021 09:37

No chance. Christmas is still 3 weeks away and if they stay off school are you going to keep them locked up to avoid germs for 3 weeks?

quiteathome · 05/12/2021 09:39

Mine have just been off with covid- luckily they were both fine with it. However that did mean I had to attempt to do school work. (I would rather catch covid again over Christmas than have to homeschool them again.

NothingIsWrong · 05/12/2021 09:39

Not a chance. Can just see my bosses face if I told him my perfectly healthy kids aren't going to school so I can't work even though the school is open and wants them there...

I quite like being employed if I'm honest!

lunar1 · 05/12/2021 09:40

No, school are doing all they reasonably can do to keep everyone safe. Parents all seem to be careful, keeping kids with colds off so it doesn't start a domino of testing. My household is as vaccinated as we can be due to ages.

I will see where we are in January l, I've tried to make the best decision for my family circumstances with every decision in this and don't have a blanket my kids will stay home/my kids will go in no matter what attitude.

The only extras I've kept them off were 4 days at the very beginning of the pandemic before schools were closed, and in January I kept ds2 off who is in primary for that Monday before they closed schools again.

Exactly this. My older school child has important exams coming up. She needs to be in school.

Plus, I'm not scared of my kids catching Covid.

Starlightstarbright1 · 05/12/2021 09:44

My ds will be in school

santabetterwashhishands · 05/12/2021 09:46

Not a chance!
The kids need to be educated by trained teachers and covid is going nowhere we need to accept it!

VikingOnTheFridge · 05/12/2021 09:47

Fuck no.

Whatdoyawannado · 05/12/2021 09:47

As an aside, we had an email from the school advising DS had been a close contact of multiple cases so to get a PCR. We did a PCR on the Friday afternoon which came back negative on Saturday morning but then he tested positive on a lateral flow Saturday afternoon. So keep up with the lateral flows despite the negative PCR!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 05/12/2021 09:49

No and getting a bit fed up of the whole 'ruining Xmas' rhetoric.

Xmas won't be ruined if you have to stay at home.

We've made plans that can all be changed if they need to be. If it turns into a few days just me, DH and DD at home by ourselves then we'll still have xmas movies, nice food, presents, games and the chance to spend time together.
