Don’t know what to do

Please try not to pile on, I’m at my wit’s end!

Dd off school with cough and temp. Being good well-behaved Mum, I ask for postal covid test as they have taken away really quick walk-in test centre. Dd worsens and heart problems. 111 say take to hospital, no ambulance needed but get there really fast. Go to hospital, docs say its a chest infection and asthma attack. Get medicine, go home.

Test arrives in post, terrified of being fined for not doing, so post back, ready to wait. And wait. And wait. Call test people after 72 hours, “oh, we’ve lost your results. Give us three days, otherwise follow standard isolation rules”.

Do I just say fuck it, the hospital didn’t think it was covid and send DD to school on Monday, or do I make DD miss three more days of school self-isolating (and me work as well)?

Ooh tricky! Maybe a LFT and then back if her temp was more than 48 hours before

pianolessons1 · 04/12/2021 13:29

go along to a walk in test centre, you'll likely have the result within 24 hours

Spitspotsput · 04/12/2021 13:39

They took away the walk in part of test centre and said we could only use it in a car. LFT can’t be used if you have symptoms.

I mean, you can use an LFT if you have symptoms. It doesn’t stop working. They just say that you should have a PCR because if you’ve got symptoms you really should be getting the more accurate test.

A LTF will give you a much clearer idea though in the meantime. I’m currently positive and my lateral flow was instant and very very strong.

IgneousRock · 04/12/2021 13:42

LFT can be used if you have symptoms. It's just that a PCR is advised (due to possibility of false negative). So I'd do that.

bagofconkers · 04/12/2021 13:47

How long ago did DD's symptoms actually begin, as that would be the start of the isolation period? If the isolation end is still a while away, I'd order another home test.

I don't think you can go by the doctors in the hospital not thinking it is COVID. If doctors could diagnose / exclude COVID just by looking / simple exam, we wouldn't need PCR tests!

4yroldhelp · 04/12/2021 13:48

I used a LFT whilst waiting for my PCR results, had symptoms and tested positive as with my DH and DS. It shouldn't be used as a guarantee or in place of a PCR but I would be doing a lateral flow in your position before making any decisions

Satsunday · 04/12/2021 13:49

I think you need a PCR result, sorry. Such a pain but the hospital couldn't know for definite without testing so hopefully theyre right in thinking she doesn't have it but without the pcr you can't know for sure. Lateral flows throw out quite a lot of false negatives but you could explain the situation to school and see what they say.

Drivingbuttercup · 04/12/2021 13:51

Whilst we waited for the pcr results to come back i tested my son with a lft and it was positive. He has symptoms.

Heartofglass12345 · 04/12/2021 14:58

If she had a cough and a temperature you could isolate her for 10 days from when they started. Is she well enough to go in on Monday?
You could order another home PCR otherwise. We posted ours on a Monday and had the results back by Wednesday morning before school started

Spitspotsput · 04/12/2021 15:45

Dd started being ill on Monday. Just feel dreadful with her missing so much school. 10 days goes to Wednesday.

OP posts:
IgneousRock · 04/12/2021 17:32

Just get her to take an LFT. If it's positive then the decision is made.

s1h2o3na · 04/12/2021 18:31

if she's got a chest infection and had symptoms( including heart symtpoms )that worried you enough to take her to hospital she really needs to stay home and recuperate....with all the bugs flying about at the moment I would want an asthmatic child to be well anyway before heading back to school. If she ends up getting run down she is more likely to get ill again soon.

Spitspotsput · 04/12/2021 20:16

@s1h2o3na you are completely right, thank you!

Just about everyone I know who has had Covid did a lateral flow because they had symptoms (why wouldn't you if you had one sitting there in your house - perhaps you don't?) and then followed up with a PCR.

Give her a LFT if you have one! Please Smile

@Spitspotsput

They took away the walk in part of test centre and said we could only use it in a car. LFT can’t be used if you have symptoms.

Who said that?

My dc tested positive on LFTs first after having symptoms for a few days.

Bobholll · 04/12/2021 22:56

Did they not covid test in hospital? I was in a few times with DD over summer and we had covid tests every time we were there!

MintMatchmaker · 04/12/2021 23:04

I tested positive on a lft after having symptoms and then confirmed it with a PCR.

This is how most people I know that have had covid have done it.
