Ok so on Tuesday night we tested my 10 year old on a lateral flow as she had a wee cough and runny nose. I had also had the same but my lateral flows had been negative. It came up positive almost immediately . We all booked a pcr test. Husbands and mine came back negative. Daughter positive.
I then started with more symptoms. Woke up in night with sore throat. Started sneezing and coughing. Nose running. Did another LFT and it was a really faint positive. Did 2 more. Same result. Flow flex for reference. I therefore went for another pcr test and again tested negative.
Spent all of yesterday in bed with this stinking cold. Not feeling much better this morning. Can't isolate much from daughter as she has autism and needs me. I am double jabbed though and have had my booster.
It just strikes me as extremely odd that I'm negative showing symptoms.
New Lfts all negative as well. Different brand. For context I work in a school and have had positive cases all around me as well.

Arghhh
Im worried if I go out I will infect people. Luckily haven't felt like it but have work on Monday.

I think you need another PCR, I think if you have a known case in the house you should retest with onset or change of your symptoms even if previous test was negative

Whattochoosenow · 04/12/2021 09:36

There was another thread about this earlier. I think the assumption was that the vaccine is doing it’s job, so a lot of people are having transient infections.

JanglyBeads · 04/12/2021 09:38

Try retesting, however it still may return a negative even if you’re u have covid, which it seems likely that you do. LFT positives are very unlikely to be wrong (only 4% are), whereas quite a high proportion of PCR negatives are false (up to 30%}. Especially as you have symptoms and are a close contact.

OhRexy · 04/12/2021 09:40

I would retest but either way assume you're positive. I believe it's more likely the PCR is a false negative than the other way around. Especially given you have symptoms and a positive family member.

rrhuth · 04/12/2021 09:42

Your lft tests were correct. I would be cautious and avoid what contact you can even though legally you don't have to. Work I guess you have to go?

This is the trouble with scrapping the household contacts for confirmed positives! Stupid government.

I'm assuming that my negative pcr Tuesday and Wednesday (symptomatic Wednesday) and now neg lateral flows are enough. Work will not be impressed if I get another pcr and have to wait for results.
This is so tricky

I'd be erring on the side you do have it - (and yes, it could be the vaccine working and your body has produced a good fighting response)

There is some evidence to suggest the time of day you take the test can matter - so afternoon tends to be the best time.

It could be you've just got a bad cold. I would take another PCR (at 5 days from exposure) and if still negative, only go back to work if symptom free.

I think this too. I had COVID in September. When I had my symptoms I tested negative on PCR and lateral flow . It was only when DH got a positive lateral flow due to testing as a contact (colleague had just had positive one) that we all went for PCRs a few days later. This time my PCR was positive but most of my symptoms had gone by then. DH was also PCR positive. Out of interest we did further lateral flows and his continued to show positive while mine were always negative.

Our teenage sons didn’t catch it from us, so I think our viral loads probably weren’t very high. Both fully jabbed and happy that the vaccines did their job.

I’d take it that if you have it you must have it only rreeealllly mildly. If you use masks, distancing, hygiene etc in work I bet you’d be minimal risk to others anyway. Like I said, our two teens didn’t get it from me or my husband and we had had very close contact. Younger son isn’t even vaccinated.
