SAGE had said ths covid situation may last another 5 years. The NHS may struggle for this long.

Really? It just feels like at this moment. It will never be ' normal' again.

I think that’s the idea!
SoOvethis · 04/12/2021 06:04

I am not sure why anyone is surprised by this. A lot of people have thought this from very early on - that there is practically no end in sight…and they have been called all sorts of funky names.
Although I do genuinely hope it’s an exaggeration and that all those who believe that there is not a bigger picture than what we see are right! Only time will tell

justaskingagain · 04/12/2021 06:08

Until the whole world is vaccinated to 70%.

Until the whole world is vaccinated to 70%.
If the vaccine wears off after 6 months, accelerated by new variants, then this will never happen. It takes to years to vaccinate the whole world.
SoOvethis · 04/12/2021 06:34

@justaskingagain
And then what about the other 30%…especially as the vaccine doesn’t stop transmission. 30% of the world is still quite a large chunk!

TheBabyBoo · 04/12/2021 06:40

UK tried to rush “back to normal” far too quickly.

If Covid vanished from the planet tomorrow, the NHS would continue to struggle and for a lot longer than five years. Anyone who thinks differently is deluded. Are people really falling for the line that Covid is solely responsible for the collapse of the NHS?

SoOvethis · 04/12/2021 06:53

@TheBabyBoo
How is the rest of Europe doing better? They have more restrictions and aren’t doing any better at the moment are they! How come France who has lots of mask wearing and health passes are now having 50,000 cases per day….

They were always behind us with the waves. Israel seeks to kick it off, then comes Uk and then Europe follows along a few months after. Clearly a lot of restrictions aren’t doing much if they aren’t able to control their waves…

It wouldn’t be struggling quite so much though. 7 -10,000 beds a day given over to something other than covid would help enormously.
Staryflight445 · 04/12/2021 06:57

Anyone who thought that this would just go away is completely naive.

Staryflight445 · 04/12/2021 06:57

The government could’ve spared us this but they continue to act too little too late.

manolantern · 04/12/2021 06:59

Yup, a few more years of this to go:

How could the government have spared us this? It is a global thing. Everywhere will be dealing with it for a long time not just the UK.

How? By the time closing the borders was even on the cards it was far too late to keep Covid out - it was already in the community. It worked (sort of, though they now have some problems trying to manage their reopening) for Aus and NZ because of their geography. There's literally nowhere in the world where lockdowns and/or other restrictions worked to stop lots of people eventually getting Covid once it had arrived in the country. The most they've done is slowed down the spread (which of course can be helpful in terms of being able to prepare your health system to cope).

So bearing in mind that the Aus/NZ response wasn't possible in the UK, name a country you think the UK should have copied, who haven't at some point had masses of Covid cases.

Staryflight445 · 04/12/2021 07:03

They could have prepared better for this wave, and instead they just continue to ignore.

Staryflight445 · 04/12/2021 07:04

We’re never going to stop it, let’s face it. But we can slow it down.

Userevermore · 04/12/2021 07:06

I'm not surprised, I imagine each summer will be reasonably normal and winters more restricted. It will be a lot of bother to travel overseas and people will probably not bother too much with holidays abroad and the main travellers will be those visiting relatives when there is a window of opportunity.

Kokeshi123 · 04/12/2021 07:10

Really, I think we need to get out of this way of thinking. The government can't just make COVID disappear. Even NZ will eventually have to deal with an exit wave when they do finally open. There is no "good" way to deal with this virus, just a bunch of different crappy ways.

Staryflight445 · 04/12/2021 07:12

I never said they can make it disappear. They could have slowed sit down though and saved many people the travel worry over Xmas.

Joystir59 · 04/12/2021 07:20

On a universal bigger picture level the human race is part of Nature, and not in control of Nature. The planet would benefit from a large chunk of the human race being wiped out.

Kokeshi123 · 04/12/2021 07:20

It was probably here already by the time the SAns raised the alarm.

Joystir59 · 04/12/2021 07:21

I'm off to see my brother abroad next year. Doing it!!!

HarrisMcCoo · 04/12/2021 07:23

I reckon around ten years before we can be carefree going about our daily lives.

DramaLlllama · 04/12/2021 07:33

I think this will be what its like for the next few years until hopefully covid mutates into a less severe form, and we can treat it like we treat the seasonal flu.

Fuckinellitsme · 04/12/2021 07:40

I'm CV and would honestly rather die than live like this for another five years. I currently have hardly any life. I realised yesterday that the depression I've been living with for about a year comes from grief - I'm actually grieving for my old life. I used to travel, go to gigs, meet new people, go for evenings out with DH... Now I'm not even supposed to go to the supermarket (though I do sometimes because I'd go mad if I didn't go anywhere at all).

It's nobody's fault (not even the government at this point, and that coming from someone who loathes them with a passion). It just is what it is. But I genuinely can't live like this for five years.
