Has anyone's child had Covid with purely gastric symptoms - cramps, stomach ache, diarrhoea? DC is LFT negative but ill on and off for a week. Tia

Was just talking about this with a colleague earlier, as she has friends whose children experienced this.
My own DD had gastric problems as strongest symptoms. Didn’t get the mainstream symptoms.

Lupinhere37 · 02/12/2021 22:44

Sorry…posted too soon. If your DC has had these symptoms for a week, I’d be inclined to check in with the GP now. Could so easily be something else.
Hope they get well soon.

My DS initially had a headache, stomach ache and nausea for a few hours. A couple of hours later vomiting and a fever. He mostly had just the fever for the next 48 hours, then developed a cough.

Vepippi · 02/12/2021 22:49

My DD8 has been complaining of stomach ache all day and has had diarrhoea. I kept her off school today. She’s just had a LFT this evening that is positive, so she’s off for a PCR tomorrow.
But so far, no fever, no cough…. it’s just been gastric problems

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 02/12/2021 23:17

I've had children in my class be sick while at school, go home and end up positive. Also one has been off for 4 days with week with the runs, we've now asked her to get a PCR. The TA who works with her is currently off with covid, the 4 children who sit around her have it too.

Dimsimmum · 02/12/2021 23:24

Yes mine only complained of tummy ache.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 02/12/2021 23:26

I also had one sniffing a bit, with aching legs. We sent her home, mum was furious 'it's just aching legs, I just want her to not do PE'. PCR positive.

Kids are doing random things.

Zero gastric issues for my DC or their friends. All have been headaches and mild fevers for a day or two and then fine.

But perhaps there's slightly different strains so that's why all the kids at our school had similar symptoms?

justaskingagain · 03/12/2021 09:39

Thanks everyone I'll book a PCR to be on safe side.

GP said 'probably a virus' as per usual!

@justaskingagain well Covid is a virus, so I guess a PCR is a good shout! But I do think the GP should reconsider a DC with a week’s history of gastric problems, especially abdo pain/cramping.
Can your DC tolerate food or fluids? I’d go back to the GP if you’re concerned about possible dehydration or even pain increasing.

It's hard to say. Covid can absolutely cause gastric symptoms but there's also so many other viruses going around. Before covid I wouldn't think much of my dc getting a stomach bug that lingers for a few days, it can linger for a week or so too. One time Ds caught a bug - he was sick a couple times one night then fine, kept him off for 48 hours for him to be sick once again then again 2 days later! So not uncommon for a stomach bug to linger! Dd caught the bug and only had it the bottom end - for a week!

IpanemaPeaHen · 03/12/2021 13:33

Dd 12 started vomiting, positive LF followed by positive PCR. Her only other symptom was a persistent headache.

That's basically what the doc said - lingering bug! DC eating and drinking normally.

@justaskingagain good that DC is is eating and drinking normally. I’d be less concerned then.

royco · 03/12/2021 14:16

Interesting, nursery have reported a sickness bug doing the rounds, and then the next day reported two cases of covid.

Coincidence, or gastric covid symptoms in the preschoolers?

Christmas3143 · 03/12/2021 14:17

@justaskingagain yes it does sound like it so sure doctor is right! At least they are eating and drinking well. Sometimes it does linger and take a while to leave their systems!

Icewiththat · 03/12/2021 14:54

My 2 yr old has had sickness for nearly a week, on and off. Now a cough and cold. Negative PCR….

TheLovelinessOfBaublyDemons · 03/12/2021 14:58

DS 14 was sick 3 times in a week, we didn't even think to test. He was supposed to do an LFT yesterday, if he did I don't know what the result was.

MoistTowelette · 04/12/2021 08:48

My DDs had stomach cramps, nausea, dizziness and red cheeks (no fever) for the first few days. This was followed by a sore throat, runny nose, fever and achy muscles. They didnt test positive on a LFT till about day 5.

loveablequalities · 04/12/2021 09:20

My kids had gastric issues when they had covid and that was my main symptom when I had it. Actually three weeks on and I'm still not right. Upset stomach is a symptom on the list I think it affects lots of people.
