Have your experience of general cold symptoms changed? Particularly your sense of taste & smell when you've had a cold/sore throat?

I had Covid in March. Amongst other symptoms, I lost my sense of smell and everything tasted rank eg tea tasted like tar.

Now, 8 months on, I am experiencing my first post-Covid cold & sore throat. DH was requested to undergo PCR testing yesterday as someone in the office had tested positive. His test was negative. As a precaution, and given my symptoms, I took an LFT yesterday which was negative but have just sent a PCR test for analysis today as feeling worse (in case the LFT was a false negative). Aside from regular cold symptoms, whatever I eat or drink tastes really weird & nasty. My morning tea tasted like tar again a bowl of tomato soup tasted of fish - which is particularly upsetting as I',m allergic to fish!! It was homemade so absolutely no chance of cross contamination with any other product etc.

Just curious to know if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Sounds like you could well have Covid, sorry. Perhaps your DH’s test was inaccurate.

I hope you feel better soon and that it's not Covid again.

When I had Covid in January I had a lot of sinus issues. I find my sinuses are very sensitive still and if I have a cold they tend to get uncomfortable quitequickly, which they didn't do before.

I lost my sense of smell with Covid but that's been ok since I recovered.

@SirVixofVixHall Yes that's my fear too. Just trying not to give in to it! I'm double jabbed and read a piece of research by the Zoe study which said that Covid infection prior to vaccination appeared to give higher immunity rates. I've been seeing that as the only positive about having had the damn virus literally 5 days before my first ever vaccine was due.

@Lindy2 That's interesting as I had more sinus symptoms than throat symptoms too. And my nose & sinus's feel quite delicate now. In fact I had a nose bleed yesterday morning which only ever happens when I have a very heavy cold, when actually yesterday's symptoms were relatively mild.

Even pre-COVID I sometimes had that weird taste thing with colds - makes tea taste awful which is the worst thing. Also since COVID I have found that I’ve lost interest in food more when I’ve had a cold (regular tests confirmed not COVID) as am tasting less flavour. I lost smell and taste when I had COVID and it’s not as bad as that, more of an echo of it?

cannaethink · 30/11/2021 16:42

I had covid in March 2020 and every cold since has been very mild but also slightly covidy. So I get sore sinuses and my chest gets slightly sore.
I also was getting a weird smell and sinus pain when my period was due but that seems to have stopped.

EdinaMonsoon · 30/11/2021 20:33

@BoogieFeet - that's exactly how I would describe the change in my taste/smell with this cold. ie it's still there but there's just less powerful. Definitely not as bad as when I had Covid.

@cannaethink I'm sorry to hear you are getting covid-like symptoms with regular colds too. My nose feels like I've somehow bashed it against something - really tender. And interesting what you say about the changes related to your cycle. I have been experiencing aching joints (which had stopped when I started taking HRT but began again post-Covid) and also experience an awareness of a weird smell towards the end of my cycle. In my case, I keep getting wafts of peach crumble! Very peculiar as I haven't actually eaten that since I was a child!

Thank you for replying. I'm feeling a little more reassured this evening.

Hope all is ok OP.
And now I want peach crumble…yum.

EdinaMonsoon · 01/12/2021 14:33

@SirVixofVixHall Grin I know, I want some too now! I'm feeling much better today thank you. Much more energy and my appetite & sense of taste seems to have returned to almost normal. Youngest DS started coughing yesterday evening and was still at it this morning. He took an LFT last night which was negative but I took him for a PCR today and kept him home from school to be safe. He's not impressed but I think it's the responsible thing to do & school agree (even though DH and I all appear to be negative). Plus he has his 2nd vaccine scheduled for Friday so being able to prove a negative PCR will be helpful in ensuring he still gets the vaccine and if it's positive I would feel dreadful if he had been carrying on as normal. I'm sure it will all be fine!
