Omicron is affecting children in South Africa

I am not sure how the SA doctor can be so relaxed about Omicron variant when we see the stats for children in hospital just coming out:

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-11-29/young-kids-make-up-10-of-hospital-cases-in-omicron-epicenter

Not wishing to worry anyone, but why don't we know about this? No sign of this headline anywhere that I can see this morning? Or maybe there has been a thread already I have missed. I accept the doctors will be very careful with small children, but the admission rate does seem high to me,

Because frankly you have overreacted to clickbait.
The comments are so full of caveats / don't know yet. It's a wait and watch situation.🤷

Of you are not wishing to worry anyone on a parenting website ask for this to be deleted

KrispyKale · 30/11/2021 10:15

If..

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 30/11/2021 10:18

Not wishing to worry anyone, but why don't we know about this?

Because it's not fully established, and all it would do is cause alarm. When the scientist say that it'll take a few weeks to learn whether this new variant produces a different pattern of disease, this is the sort of thing that will be included in what they are looking at. Right now it's still too soon to say

Squirrelblanket · 30/11/2021 10:19

There's a coronavirus forum. HTH.

SnackSizeRaisin · 30/11/2021 10:25

not sure how the SA doctor can be so relaxed about Omicron variant when we see the stats for children in hospital just coming out:

The article you linked doesn't give any stats though, does it? They don't even know if the children admitted had the new strain, it doesn't look at it as a proportion of total infections, and sample sizes are much too small to be reliable. It's a purely speculative clickbait article

Better to stick our heads in the sand?

KrispyKale · 30/11/2021 10:28

Not at all. I said watch and wait if you are following developments in South Africa / worldwide to that level.
No point speculating here on a sketchy report. That is fear mongering to be frank.

Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 10:28

I have children of my own and my SIL in the states sent me the link. I think we should know about this!

Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 10:28

There are lots of articles about this, not just the one I have added BTW

OP posts:
KrispyKale · 30/11/2021 10:29

What is there to know? Nothing yet.

Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 10:29

I suspect this is why there is a news conference this evening, and why the reaction seems quite an overreaction up to this point. To me anyway. I was really wondering what all the fuss is about until now.

KrispyKale · 30/11/2021 10:30

Yes, articles to get us us to click in an attention economy.
Honestly I give up here. Bye.

Workinghardeveryday · 30/11/2021 10:31

@Fairylights25 thanks for posting, I don’t get the comments about how you shouldn’t have!!

Akire · 30/11/2021 10:33

You can’t compare countries to same standard. So much of SA is in dire poverty with no water or electric and large portion living with HIV or other conditions that are not similar to health of most of UK population. If it is anything worry about we will know soon enough. No point panicking or worrying

Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 10:33

Nor do I, I think we need to know if more children are being hospitalised. It does not say more fatalities, but it does say there are more young children being hospitalised. Why wouldn't we want to know that? Surely that affects the decisions we make for our families, holiday plans etc.

Yes we need more data, yes we definitely need more clarification but the financial markets are tanking on this news so there is clearly something in it, as they were rallying yesterday.

A lot of information is being covered up regarding covid. And vaccination injuries.

But this isn't going to change. People are happy to ignore it. I can understand why as it's scary to think about.

I'm triple vaccinated and have had covid last year. But I do know of plenty who haven't faired as well.

Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 10:34

Maybe this means we will all need to get the children vaccinated very quickly?

It does explain why some countries are closing borders though, and why everyone is so worried.

OP posts:
Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 10:35

I agree Juniper, as I was very ill with covid and double jabbed.

I hope we will learn more soon.

This needs to be in the Coronavirus topic please. You haven't even pretended to make it an AIBU. Report your OP to MNHQ and ask them to move it.

Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 10:37

news.bloomberglaw.com/health-law-and-business/toddlers-make-up-10-of-hospital-cases-in-omicron-epicenter

There is a better explanation on this one, for anyone that is able to read it.

Kbyodjs · 30/11/2021 10:37

It does say:
“although a similar trend occurred during the third wave when delta was dominant, said Waasila Jassat, public health specialist at the institute.”

Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 10:38

How do I move it? And sorry but there are LOADS of covid related threads in AIBU!

The AIBU if you need one, is that we are supposed to be flying to the US in a few days time, and I am not sure what to do - my children are too young to be vaccinated, and two have already had covid so not eligible just yet.

I am sure many of us have quandaries like this.
