Confused by rules

Hi

My 2 year old has covid symptoms (continuous cough which is waking her up)

Under the current Welsh rules, children under 5 are not to be tested unless a doctor requests it. But they also say that vaccinated adults and children 5-17 must self isolate until the affected has a negative pcr result.

Because she’s not going to get a pcr, do we all have to isolate now for 10 days, for what is most likely a cold (but we’ll never know) and again for the probably 5 or 6 winter colds she’ll pick up?

Surely this isn’t right?

Sounds batshit. Can you request a request?

LeftieLucy · 30/11/2021 09:10

Just called the doctors and apparently not

She'll have to isolate but nobody else will unless you get symptoms

That’s not the case, I don’t think. According to the ‘rules’ we all have to isolate. But because they won’t test her as she’s under 5 we have to do the full 10 days even though it might not be covid?

Just to clarify, we’re vaccinated- I’ve had 3 doses, 18 yr old has had 2 and 16 year old he had 1.
The only one who wouldn’t have to isolate is the 4 year old.
These rules make no sense.

Are you sure that's right? Where we are, children under 5 don't need to be tested if in close contact with a positive case (although they can be tested if you want). But everyone, including under 5's, is to be tested if they have symptoms themselves.

Porthia · 30/11/2021 13:22

Well it says on your screenshot that you would have to isolate until they had a PCR which of course she isn’t going to have so I would just do lateral flows on everyone and carry on with life. It seems crazy for you all to isolate when it may not even be Covid and you have no way of finding out.

Watapalava · 30/11/2021 13:26

You don't have to test or isolate.

Under 5 basically don't count

I really wish this was the case in England. My poor 3 year old is properly hysterical now if I come near him with a Covid test. He has a temperature or cough every month at the moment (because, you know, he is 3!) and every time it’s a horrible traumatic drama. So far he has never actually had Covid!
CovidMakesThingsHard · 30/11/2021 13:31

I know of friends im Wales who have had a tests for their under 5’s and don’t think it was at doctor request?
Just try ordering a postal test for her with her details and if it comes do it. What about a LFT?
If you’re near the border book an English site? Easier than you all having to isolate if hat is the rules.

Watapalava · 30/11/2021 13:32

From welsh gov webiste

Fully vaccinated or aged 5 to 17
If someone in your household has symptoms or has tested positive and you are fully vaccinated or aged 5 to 17 you should self-isolate and take a PCR test. If your test is negative you can stop isolating.

Not fully vaccinated
If someone in your household has tested positive and you are not fully vaccinated you should self-isolate for 10 days. You should take a PCR test on day 2 and day 8. You should self-isolate for 10 days even if your tests are negative.

Children aged under 5
Children aged under 5 do not have to self-isolate or take a test if they have been a contact of a positive case in their household or otherwise.

Basically under 5 do not count at all so will never has to test, isolate or impact anyone else

Watapalava · 30/11/2021 13:35

it goes onto say...

"For those children under 5 who have COVID-19 symptoms but are not tested for the virus they do not need to complete any formal period of self-isolation. However, we advise that those children should be kept home from school or childcare until they are well enough to return. A simple cough is not a reason to keep them home.

Many young children have cough and cold symptoms and evidence shows that most infections are caused by other viruses.

Evidence also shows that the small number of young children testing positive for COVID-19 are unlikely to pass it on to others"

So you carry on as normal as does child once child is well enough

LeftieLucy · 30/11/2021 13:37

@Watapalava Thank you. It didn’t say what was supposed to happen in the household if it was the under5 who had symptoms. We all did lfts which were negative (there was no point testing 2 year old the amount of snot she has) so will go back to school/college/work tomorrow.

Can't you guys all take a PCR and then un-isolate if that one is negative? So everyone over 5 do a close contact PCR just in case?

Watapalava · 30/11/2021 13:40

basically the under 5 don't count as contacts or cases so have no impact on you. No isolation for anyone as your contact is under 5 if that makes sense! Im sure they could have worded it better than they have.

mejon · 30/11/2021 13:44

You could get everyone else to do a PCR and then carry on as normal if they come back negative.

I'm in Wales too and 15yo DD1 tested positive over the weekend. The rest of us took PCRs yesterday (negative thankfully) and we'll be doing daily LFTs until her 10 days are over. We've also been advised to do another PCR on day 8 but don't have to isolate whilst waiting for the result.
