Testing twice a week?

julieca · 29/11/2021 20:53

I read someone say that we should all be testing twice a week. This was news to me. I know that people in some jobs are supposed to test twice a week. But surely we don't all have to?

I'm sure it's advised for everyone to do it. It's certainly promoted where I am in Scotland. I try and remind ds to do his for school. The rest of us do it more sporadically

gettingolderandgrumpy · 29/11/2021 20:56

Are you in England? , tests have been readily available for months here and yes it’s twice a month. of course not everyone does I only do it occasionally now if I feel under the weather maybe but I’ve had covid.

PerfectlyUnsuitable · 29/11/2021 20:57

Apart from MN, I’ve never come across it.

If they have promoted in england, they haven’t done a good job of it Imo.

Children yes
Some professions yes
Some companies yes

As a general rule for everyone? Nope

julieca · 29/11/2021 20:57

Yes I am in England. I know they are easy to get, But is this really official advice? I have never seen it anywhere.

The fact tests have been readily available doesn’t equate the fact we are all supposed to do twice weekly LFT
julieca · 29/11/2021 20:59

@PerfectlyUnsuitable that was my understanding. So teacher friends do them twice a week. And we have done them before visiting anyone vulnerable. Also had to do it before going to the theatre. But twice a week - not required as far as I knew.

Yes, it’s been advice for a good while. We’re boring, don’t do much but do test before meeting up with anyone outside of the family. It’s not difficult.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 29/11/2021 21:02

It’s been advertised in newspapers and magazines it was more so at the beginning.

I am not asking whether it is difficult. @MrsSkylerWhite how do you know you are supposed to test twice a week?

OP posts:
julieca · 29/11/2021 21:03

Okay it has been a pretty crap campaign then. I am a news junkie and don't know this.

Yes Nicola made a big deal about us being able to get these tests to do at home when it was first started and encouraged us all to regularly test in our families .

It was recommended on various broadcasts months ago, when restrictions began to lift. There were tv ads too, pointing out they were free.

PerfectlyUnsuitable · 29/11/2021 21:05

@gettingolderandgrumpy that’s exactly why I’m saying the campaign has obviously not been very good.

I don’t buy newspapers or magazines, like a lot of people really.
Never seen anything like this on my feeds (Twitter, fb etc…)
Don’t have a Tv
Like more and more people nowadays

nordica · 29/11/2021 21:07

My local council (in London) has been promoting this lots for months now and it was definitely talked about in the government press conferences. www.gov.uk/guidance/understanding-lateral-flow-antigen-testing-for-people-without-symptoms

I've been doing mine before a weekly appointment I have and whenever I meet more vulnerable people - just attended a party this weekend and we all took a test that morning as agreed with the host as some guests were elderly.

dementedpixie · 29/11/2021 21:07

I go to the sports centre regularly and they have had test kits available to collect every time I've been there recently (scotland)

julieca · 29/11/2021 21:09

I remember the government saying they were free and you can get them on the government website. Friends told me where you can pick them up locally. But I thought they were use when you think you should.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know many people who test twice a week.

People who do a LFT if they have symptoms yes. Even though I’m that case, they are supposed to do a PCR.
People who do it for a cold, yes.

People who do it wo any symptoms at all? Nope.

FWIW I’ve been to a funeral recently. people were asked to do a LFT before hand to protect the (many) older people in attendance. I know most people did the test. But none of them did them as a matter if fact either.

PerfectlyUnsuitable · 29/11/2021 21:11

and whenever I meet more vulnerable people - just attended a party this weekend and we all took a test that morning as agreed with the host as some guests were elderly.

Yep, I’ve seen that quite a lot too. Testing when meeting up with more vulnerable people or just meeting up in big(get) groups

Crimsonripple · 29/11/2021 21:13

I've never seen anywhere it saying twice a week. I know they're easy to get and use but it's only recommendations not a mandated requirement. I certainly haven't been doing that or will do that. I'm fed up of the whole thing now!

PerfectlyUnsuitable · 29/11/2021 21:14

@julieca there is a thread running asking if people have some test boxes at home as a matter if fact.

Many people don’t….

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2021 21:16

We've been asked by work to test twice a week. We have people that will supply and help you do the test at work if you like, but I just order boxes from the NHS and do it myself at home which is also fine by them.

greenlynx · 29/11/2021 21:18

We’ve got tests and advice to do them twice a week from DD’s school last year. It’s just an advice not necessary so she did them but DH and I didn’t ( we’re both at home) Now she moved to college and the advice stayed the same. We all do them once a week now and before appointments etc.

Orchidflower1 · 29/11/2021 21:19

Yes the message has most certainly been for all people to test twice a week with the additional request of before going places with vulnerable or larger groups.

Not quite sure how one can be a news junky and not know this.

julieca · 29/11/2021 21:20

@Orchidflower1 I use four news apps and have never read that anywhere.
