Why the panic of Omicron is mild?

All of this just seems utter bollocks. A handful of new cases of a variant that could potentially pose less of a threat than delta. Yet with delta we were basically told to keep calm and carry on. No masks, no isolating, children or C+ parents going to school, no social distancing or any rules really.

I'm seeing news reports now encouraging everyone to go get their booster jab and their flu jab to help protect against the new variant and flu this winter. But if you come in contact or test positive with Omicron even if you're fully vaccinated then you must isolate for 8 days. Then seeing other reports saying that Omicron is resistant to the vaccine, so the pharm companies are rushing out a new vaccine - so potentially everyone will be encouraged to get a 4th vaccine.

Meanwhile even though you're vaccinated you can still spread it and it's been said that the first positive case of Omicron to enter this country was via a fully vaxx'd person because that's the only way you can travel now. But the vaccines were the ticket of this pandemic they said. Obviously there are fewer ill people because of the vaccine, but there are also a lot of people experiencing worrying Ng side effects with them as well. What will the build up of all these vaccines be doing to us I wonder. Genuine question we may not know for years.

Im just getting so fed up with all this now. It's so depressing

And ICUs do tend to have a lot of unvaccinated patients who in many cases would not have need to be there if they had had the jab.

Cobiemakesmesmulder · 29/11/2021 18:25

Better to over react than under react.

Also, mild variants of most things are usually more contagious, so if lots of people catch it at once, it'll be large numbers of the workforce out at once, which impacts on things being open or operating normally.

Plus "mild" doesn't mean, well enough to carry on as normal. It means "not needing supplementary oxygen".

nojudgementhere · 29/11/2021 18:27

@halcyondays

I think about three quarters of deaths are in the over 75s. Even if fully jabbed they are still much more vulnerable than young people. ICU patients will on average be a bit younger as you need to be fairly strong in order to go on a ventilator. Frail elderly patients are unlikely to end up in ICU.
Oh okay that makes sense. Thanks for your reply.
foxgoosefinch · 29/11/2021 18:27

I'm sorry but I find this hard to believe when the majority of deaths are now within the vaccinated according to the ONS. Please can anyone help me out and explain this discrepancy as I genuinely don't understand it?

Older patients and those with serious underlying health conditions (the more susceptible to dying from Covid) are not often put in ICU as their bodies can’t tolerate it.

Ventilation is a very invasive process which is extremely hard on the body. Only the relatively younger and fitter patients (in general, under 60-65) will normally be given ICU support.

2boysand1princess · 29/11/2021 18:28

I took it as the vaccines are our way out of this, as in lower death rates. I believe that has happened. Anyone remember the number of daily deaths we were seeing at the peak of the pandemic?

foxgoosefinch · 29/11/2021 18:28

X-post sorry halcyondays!

Thanks - thought I was going crazy as it just didn't add up but that makes sense.

A short video summary of what we know about omicron, and advice on how to keep people safe in an airborne pandemic.

foxgoosefinch · 29/11/2021 18:42

A friend is a renal consultant - apparently the heavy sedatives required for ICU aren’t tolerated by patients with blood pressure or kidney problems, as large amounts of drugs have to be given to raise blood pressure on ventilation, which seriously affects kidney function. Elderly people or those with serious blood pressure issues are likely to go straight into major renal failure. (Another reason why high BMI / heart problems make it difficult to recover in ICU).

visitingagain · 29/11/2021 18:45

@Smokeyfish I can't believe you think that anti vax views aren't extreme. You're hardly being denied free speech. But disinformation and frankly lies and conspiracy theories aren't at all the rational other side of the argument. They are dangerous and I am constantly shocked that mumsnet allows them.

PerfectlyUnsuitable · 29/11/2021 18:46

What’s the Relationhsip between high BMI and high blood pressure @foxgoosefinch?

foxgoosefinch · 29/11/2021 18:53

@PerfectlyUnsuitable

What’s the Relationhsip between high BMI and high blood pressure *@foxgoosefinch*?
It’s complex but on a basic level the heart has to work harder to pump the blood around the body - so there’s a general association of obesity with higher blood pressure and poorer liver and kidney function (I’m not a renal expert myself but my DP is under consultant care for high blood pressure, and takes 3 separate medications for it!)

Without a doubt MN has been the biggest clearing house of dangerous misinformation of any major site in the UK.

Worst bit is, i know darn well which parents will make the biggest noise if schools get closed again too.

Pretty much all of them I would have hoped.

I've just remembered that Clive Dix told us there would be no covid circulating by August.

“ South Africa province where the Omicron COVID-19 variant was first detected sees 330% surge in hospitalizations in the past two weeks”

Now this is in an area of low vaccination.

But do you want to take the risk?

I think for once we are doing the right thing . Let the scientists do their work .

Unsure33 · 29/11/2021 21:46

@visitingagain

I totally agree with you. The amount of quite frankly dangerous non factual information that is posted on a forum such as this , is quite frankly shocking .

Opinions are one thing . Downright lies are another. The facts are out there and it does not take long to find them .

Makes me laugh that I need to wear a mask whilst shopping,but I could go to a club or have casual sex and it's no bother...

Whu020 · 30/11/2021 18:03

Australia's been in lockdown for 7 months with about 1000 cases and heath rules are being pushed through government that are draconian and severe punishment to your lifestyle if you don't have the mandated vaccine, something is seriously not right one way or another.

Tuba437 · 30/11/2021 18:09

It seems like an easy way to increase vaccine and booster take up before it become widely known its not a huge threat.

Could even become a positive if its more transmissible and less deadly.

I agree that it's illogical, but how many vulnerable people will be there with you during the casual sex?

Compared to in the supermarket?

Mummabear89 · 30/11/2021 18:29

I know that it's not the point of your post but someone pointed out that Omicron is an anagram for Moronic. It did make me laugh that they didn't check something like that before naming it. My younger sister thinks that we'll be back in lockdown after Christmas which personally I would rather not.

exiledfromcornwall · 30/11/2021 18:34

I distinctly remember Hancock saying that the vaccines were the way out of this.
