Would you go to New York at the moment?

Just that really. Due to go on Saturday for 4 nights.

Keep switching between definitely go and then not sure.

I can manage work to allow time to get the pcr test on return.

Just concerned about potential for things to drastically change when out there. Probably unlikely but you never know and we have seen things change very quickly before.

No, purely because I'd be buggered if there was a sudden rule change and I was stranded there.

chipsandpeas · 28/11/2021 18:43

I’m here just now and feel safer than at home tbh everyone is masked up need to show vac status for lots of things

Morley19 · 28/11/2021 18:48

Thank you for your replies

The sudden rule change is my worry. Just don’t know how likely that is. I guess none of us do

Any sudden rule change and you’re stuck. So no, I wouldn’t go myself.

Carrotte · 28/11/2021 18:56

No. No way would I fly anywhere unless I had family there.

PyjamaFan · 28/11/2021 18:57

Nope. But I wouldn't go anywhere abroad at the moment.

ChequerBoard · 28/11/2021 18:58

No. Too many unknowns to embark on travelling anywhere at the moment.

The governor of Nee York has declared a state of emergency there so I definitely wouldn't be planning a trip right now.

TillyTopper · 28/11/2021 18:59

Yes I would. We also hope to go abroad for Xmas, negative CV19 tests permitting!

MorganSeventh · 28/11/2021 18:59

New York State have declared a state of emergency over the Omicron variant, so I guess the biggest risk is if they decide that passengers from countries with Omicron, like the the UK, have to undergo quarantine or further tests before being free to enter the country. Which if you're only going for 4 days could eat up a substantial portion of your trip, plus be expensive. If your insurance covers you for quarantine costs, then I guess that's less of a worry.

Hairbrush123 · 28/11/2021 19:00

There has always been a risk travelling through a pandemic OP and you should have known that when booking that things can rapidly change.

As things stand, I would go. I’m going away on Wednesday abroad and I am thoroughly looking forward to it. How long do you plan to go for? You seem to have a plan if you have to self isolate waiting for the test to come back. Life is going to be like this for a while so I would make the most of it while you can. Good luck either way.

Hairbrush123 · 28/11/2021 19:01

Oh saw that you’re going for four nights. Ignore my question then!

Too unpredictable and ever changing for me just now. I'd be worried about getting stuck there (worst places to be stuck, I know!)
Delatron · 28/11/2021 19:04

I would go. But we’re all different. I’ve travelled quite a bit during the pandemic. It’s extra stress and hassle but worth it.

I can understand why others don’t though.

But life is short and if you can cope with the uncertainty I’d go. If you’ll stress the whole time postpone.

dabbydeedoo · 28/11/2021 19:11

No, I wouldn't. I've just, with a very heavy heart, cancelled a trip to Spain because everything is just way too fast changing at the moment. It might well be fine and I'll regret not going, but countries can bring in new restrictions at the drop of a hat. All it would take is an announcement while you're on the flight that anyone coming from Britain needs to quarantine for X days, and that's your trip ruined. Also if anyone on the plane tests positive for omicron, you're quarantining 10 days when you get back regardless of your own test result. I really couldn't be arsed with that at all.

I think my trip would be ruined anyway with constantly checking for updates and rule changes - hardly relaxing, is it? People will say it's always like this but it isn't - this is a very knee jerk reaction to a very new situation, after months of relative stability. My own feeling is this just isn't the time and it's better to wait and see regarding travel.

MarshaBradyo · 28/11/2021 19:12

I would go but I get that the uncertainty could be stressful and there is a risk of change

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

Th variety in your replies echoed the chaos in my mind!

Thank you

My son is still planning to fly there on 8 December. He’s 24 and can work from home if necessary on his return while waiting for pcr results. He plans on getting tested as soon after landing as possible.

Is he not concerned about the possibility of getting stuck or quarantined there? This is my primary concern. It wouldn't be a problem for me to WFH waiting for test results or even to quarantine ten days, but the idea of scrambling to book flights costing £2000 at the last minute to beat a travel ban or being quarantined in a hotel abroad is awful.
UserOfManyNames · 28/11/2021 19:50

Yes, I would although I’d be slightly nervous at the thought of us needing emergency medical care with the state of emergency!

I’m booked to go with DD at the beginning of January. We will be devastated if it’s cancelled TBH (first girl’s trip abroad to celebrate our birthdays and the only opportunity that DH can be at home with younger DC) but I am half expecting it to be.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/11/2021 19:53

No. Wouldn’t have done so a week or two ago - this time of year was always going to be difficult in theory. Certainly wouldn’t now, unless you can comfortably afford to pay for quarantine hotel on return and isolate for two weeks.
If you do decide to go, apart from hoping you have a wonderful time, also hope you have belt and braces medical repatriation insurance. You really don’t want to be stuck in the US without it.

genuinequestion21 · 28/11/2021 19:54

You're extremely unlikely to get stuck though. You're not going for long and you can usually get home.

I was ' stuck ' abroad when the UK went into a lock down and it was completely fine to get back.

It's on Saturday and it's only 4 days. It's unlikely that they'll make you go to a quarantine hotel in a week.

I would take the risk.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 28/11/2021 19:57

Last week? yes.

Now? No.

A week is a long time in a pandemic.

AndMatt · 28/11/2021 19:58

If I was booked, I be checking and double checking my insurance to make sure I was covered if the stay had to be extended/quarantine rules change, but still go.

But this is why I don't have any foreign travel booked. To my mind there's been too much uncertainty and the holiday's not worth the worry.

Kitkat151 · 28/11/2021 19:59

Definately not now....IMO there’s more restrictions around the corner ...and they will be implemented swiftly this winter

The UK govt buggered about for far too long before the first lockdown in March, when most people were already taking their own precautions. It was roundly criticised and it will be doing its utmost to avoid the same this time round.
Flights from 6 African countries were stopped quick sharp. If several cases appear in the US in the next few days, which is likely, it will act quickly too. When a virus mutates, it doesn’t only mutate in one country.

Please make sure you have good insurance, OP.
