Positive PCR

Hi all;
Hope everyone is well? I just want to post my story as I am extremely confused and want to know if I am alone in this or have others experienced the same?
So our son has tested positive for coronavirus via pcr. He had been a close contact of a positive case initially so he had been isolating he then developed extremely mild symptoms such as mild headaches and mild pains in his stomach. He has tested positive via PCR test but he has not isolated from the rest of us (I personally wouldn’t expect him to) so far none of the rest of us have showed symptoms or have tested positive via antigen tests or PCR’s
Is it possible his pcr test was wrong he doesn’t have it at all?! It just seems crazy to me that we’re hearing how transmissible Covid is yet we’re all under the one roof and we have not caught it from him? I know it’s early days yet as potentially he is only on day 7?

Is anyone else in the house vaccinated? Or have you had previous infections?

There aren’t false positive results from PCRs

Kathy2020 · 27/11/2021 23:06

Both of us- his parents are fully vaccinated his sibling isn’t. There have also been more positive cases via pcr and antigen tests from his class this week?

No previous infections (that we know of)

I have several friends across the U.K. where one person was positive but not everyone in the household caught it. Some attempted isolation for the positive member of the family, but not in every case.

Pcrs don’t tend to give false positives and given he’s a close contact it’s almost certainly right. Our immune systems are so complex. I’ve had a few friends who have had children who have tested positive and no one else in the household have had it and others where the whole household got it right away.

My DS had covid a few months ago as confirmed by pcr test. He was quite unwell so slept in my bed with me cuddled up for 5 nights, coughing and sneezing over me. I also realised on day 7 that him and his brother had been using the same toothbrush all week 🤦🏻‍♀️

But no one else caught it from him - not sure how?! We - adults - are double jabbed and had covid at the start of the pandemic but our other DC hasn't been vaccinated or had covid as far as I know?

Jasharps · 27/11/2021 23:13

We are a family of 6, 4 DC all under 10 so not vaxxed. DD1 tested positive (mild headache symptoms on one day and nothing else) in summer and nobody else did. DD3 recently postive with mild coughing and again nobody else got it. Kids all share rooms etc too.

DD2 also has half her class off over last couple of weeks and multiple negative tests.

Koalaleia · 27/11/2021 23:17

DS(11) has it at the moment, it’s his last day of isolating tomorrow. He felt unwell for approx 24 hours, been fine since.

Me, DH & DD(7) haven’t caught it so far. We’re double vaccinated, not had Covid before. We’ve all had PCR (negative) and tested daily with LFT.

So to answer your question, yes it’s possible.

wkqkabqhb · 27/11/2021 23:20

I know quite a few families where the kids have got it and the adults haven't. This happened both before vaccines were available and afterwards.

Thank you all so much for your replies they are comforting
When we initially got his pcr results we did not even question them; especially as he had been a confirmed close contact, it’s just that his symptoms have been so mild despite the fact that he is immunocompromised as is his sibling who has tested negative and is thankfully showing no symptoms yet
Part of me is panicking thinking I’ve never got so lucky that both of my children have escaped this virus completely unscathed after fearing it for nearly 2 years?!

That’s really great news that he’s coping so well with it. It must be a huge relief after all the worry. I hope you all stay well.

I had the same concern recently with a positive PCR - I tested positive but felt fine for 5 days thereafter and tested negative on lateral flows and worked through at home. Day 6 had a fever and symptoms but by day 7 it had abated. We are a house of 6 and my daughter had it at half term and didn't pass it to any of us, including her twin sister who she shares a bunk bed with. We didn't make her isolate in her bedroom alone as too young. She went back to school and then a week later her sister caught it at school and then so did I. 5 days later my DH has tested positive but my other two children (secondary) are still testing negative on PCR and LFT. Conclusion- there is no rhyme or reason to this at all!!

Hi, we are in a similar situation. DD tested positive on Thursday, no symptoms. We had her tested as she is a close contact of another positive case. We would not have known otherwise. I hope she doesn’t get any symptoms. If she doesn’t then I think I’ll consider us very lucky really. Me and DH both vaccinated - he has had 2 (and will get booster when eligible). I have had 3 as I am in a booster trial. Good luck to you!

Yes my girls had no symptoms at all and felt fine with covid - so much so that I had to do homeschooling with them Confused my symptoms were very light. Feels quite weird to have finally had it, bit of a relief really to have faced it and not ended up very poorly. Am doubled jabbed.
