Symptoms 6 weeks after positive Pcr

Child had a positive pcr beginning of October, no symptoms and perfectly fine. Dad was very Ill with Covid and all the household tested as a result.

Over 6 weeks later, child is now not well. Sore throat and was unsettled at night so kept off school. Evening time and a cough and high temperature starts so have booked for a pcr in the morning.

They do say not to test 90 days after a positive result unless new symptoms, but can we get another positive case so soon?

You shouldn’t test again so soon. I did a trial last year after having covid & I tested positive for about 8 weeks post covid 🙈 but I wasn’t infectious anymore, it’s just dead virus cells..

I’m not really sure what you are supposed to do if symptomatic though. I did read that lateral flows could be better in these circumstances. They are very unlikely to pick up any dead virus & if it was positive, she likely is.

Do they have any abdominal pain, a rash or sore eyes?

MistressPoldark07 · 26/11/2021 21:03

Hi there,

I had this problem/dilemma yesterday morning. I had covid - positive PCR result and symptoms - 5 weeks ago. Wednesday night I started coughing badly again. I’m aware the guidance says not to test for 90 days unless have symptoms. I’m also a teacher and have a vulnerable OH who also had Covid and is still not fully recovered. So I self-isolated and went for a test yesterday. Mine thankfully came back negative.

Saks6 · 26/11/2021 22:00

Oh no I’m not sure what to do now.

He has a high temperature and a cough. He’s been crying but got him down now and no cough. The symptoms started out of the blue so I have taken them to be brand new.

Could be covid again, could be a different virus. Do a lat flow? Call 111 if you can't keep the fever down/vomiting /rash

MistressPoldark07 · 26/11/2021 22:13

Hope he feels better soon. I’d get him tested. If it comes back negative, you will have peace of mind re covid. If it comes back positive, it could be a false positive or it may be a true positive. No one knows how long you’re immune from covid after having had it. If you decide not to get him tested, then please keep him off school. In my area, schools are struggling with staff issues re covid.

Saks6 · 26/11/2021 22:15

No it’s a brand new cough and a high temperature. He was quite distressed and it all started just after tea.

That came back negative. I did one too.

He’s had calpol and gone to bed. Still looks flushed in the face but temperature has lowered.

Yes I feel like these are new symptoms. I will get him tested tomorrow. He wasn’t himself when he was getting ready for school this morning and was tired from continually waking all night so I didn’t take him in.

I hope you get better soon and a speedy recovery for your husband.

Thanks all for your help

Thank you. Unfortunately, I think my husband is in for the long haul with this. I hope the PCR test brings back a negative test and peace of mind, and that your son feels much better soon.

HesterShaw1 · 26/11/2021 22:47

Surely it could be another virus?

Saks6 · 27/11/2021 12:29

This is the problem, I don’t know. I don’t want to take the risk. He has a new cough and temperature so new symptoms. He got tested this morning, so now we are just waiting for results.

OP posts:
HesterShaw1 · 27/11/2021 13:26

But even if it's positive, it's most likely to be picking up the initial infection. You still won't know.

It's very unlikely that he has no antibodies from the initial infection, therefore surely it's more likely to be another cold virus. There are a lot about. I had Covid in September, and now have a grotty cold.

Saks6 · 27/11/2021 14:09

Would you just self isolate or carry on going to school? I understand what you are saying but I’m still anxious about this.

School would not let him continue if he had a constant cough.

OP posts:
Adarajames · 29/11/2021 14:59

If he has symptoms that you should keep him in and self isolate, that’s the regulations when it’s within90 days of previous positive because of the issue of testing positive again anyway

OrSomeSortOfWokAtTheVeryLeast · 02/12/2021 12:08

@saks6 how is your son now? Did his test come back positive? Just wondering what they said in regards to it being the previous infection or a new one. Hope he is feeling better.

Saks6 · 03/12/2021 17:50

He tested negative thankfully.
He’s still got a tickly cough but it’s not very frequent. I’m putting down to the usual winter school bugs.

I am glad I got him tested. At least I know for certain it’s not Covid for my piece of mind.

Thanks Smile

I'm glad he had a negative result. There is so little guidance on what to do in this situation and also it differs depending on where you look/who you ask. We had the same situation with an asymptomatic but positive case and then two weeks later a cough and a high temp.

I didn't test but we did isolate, again, for 10 more days. Next time I would just do the PCR and hope its negative.

Saks6 · 03/12/2021 18:20

Yes, it’s very difficult to decide what to do. The guidelines are so vague. I think you have to make a judgement call and look at what is best for you.

If anyone is unsure with new / continued symptoms, then call 119 so they can run through the various steps to take

ILOVEALLCAKES · 04/12/2021 06:18

My DD9 tested positive 6 weeks ago and hasn’t been well since. In the last 2 weeks has been very unwell requiring a course of antibiotics for an ear infection. Started coughing a lot and high temperature yesterday. Seen by GP who advised repeat PCR despite the short time frame. Off this morning to get tested.
