How do you transport someone with covid?

My db has gone to hospital to get a chest x ray on the advice of 111
40s
Covid positive

20 miles from his home
Lives alone

If they do not admit him and send him home, how can he get home? Without exposing someone to covid? He’s in red zone of hospital but not admitted as yet.

I am an hour away and whilst I am willing to expose myself and drive him to his home, I am less willing to expose my mum (next door, terminal cancer) and my Y11 who is facing a slew of exams which “count” in the event of disruption in summer. Not to mention my dh and dd.

How is he supposed to get home, ideally? Do hospitals have transport for these situations?

No, you’ll have to go and get him. I had to fetch my Covid-positive DH from hospital despite being covid-positive myself. I had to wait outside in the car and they sent him (masked) straight from the red zone put to meet me.

You were same household though so slightly different?

Taxi. Mask. Shrug.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/11/2021 17:49

Masks. Windows open if you can (bring blankets!). Sit in the passenger side rear seat.

icklekid · 26/11/2021 17:49

If he doesn’t have anyone else then go and mask up with windows down. You’ll still count as close contact so will need PCR but as long as that is negative and your vaccinated you can continue after, you might want to continue lateral flow or do another PCR a few days later to check?

A friend left hospital in a taxi and the doctor told her not to tell the driver she had covid this was during the first wave.

Isbdm · 26/11/2021 18:02

Bloody hell. Poor taxi drivers!

What would happen if someone doesn't have family?

Somebodylikeyew · 26/11/2021 18:06

How did he get there?

Totallydefeated · 26/11/2021 18:10

He should ask the Dr what they advise he does.

Isbdm · 26/11/2021 18:11

The way he got there was a lift from a friend who also has covid right now. The friend struggled to get him there and the friend has slept since as he himself is really quite ill with covid. And so cannot drive another 40 mile round trip.

If there is no family to collect then hospital transport will need to be arranged. Speak to PALS at the hospital

sijjy · 26/11/2021 18:13

He could ask for the hospital to provide transport. It would be in one of the ambulances that doesn't have blue lights. I'm not 100% if he would fit the criteria for using it that's something you would have to check. My dh did this job while furloughed and transported a lot of covid positive patients to hospital and home.

ZealAndArdour · 26/11/2021 18:23

The hospital will probably know of local taxi firms who are happy to take covid patients. I work in a hospital and know of two firms in Nottingham who will do covid jobs, just need to make sure you tell them when you ring to book as they’re using a ringfenced vehicle.

So yeah, there’s probably a taxi firm who do it, so he can just book himself a taxi to get home.

Isbdm · 26/11/2021 18:25

Wow that sounds like a good option zeal
