Is the management of Covid a teensy bit racist?

I can't help thinking that if the new variant was in America or Western Europe, the action would have been less extreme.

Or is it just sensible management of the situation, as it's in a continent that will have less economic impact on UK?

I keep reading thats its the worse varient yet, even compared to the original from wuhan which has killed hundreds of thousands of people in two years. That's not fucking racism

tanstaafl · 26/11/2021 10:58

No.

WhatMattersMost · 26/11/2021 10:58

Not even the teensiest.

It’s what should have happened before when delta kicked off. So I’m hoping this government have finally learned some of their lessons.

What is problematic is that this wasn’t seen as a global pandemic by the West. Vaccines should have been shared globally to reduce the incidence of mutations (by reducing the number of infections).

QualityChecked · 26/11/2021 11:01

So we would imeadiately shut down flights from, say, Berlin in the same situation?

My son and I tested at the same time at a test centre. Mine came back within 18 hours, my sons was 2 days later. Both positive.

Listener2021 · 26/11/2021 11:03

No.
For once it seems the government has learnt the lesson of India and the delta variant.

It's a great pity that vaccine take up has been so low in South Africa that vaccines have to be destroyed because of going out of date.

Agree, this is what scientists said would happen if vaccines were not shared with the poorest countries.

@QualityChecked

Yes. But by all means force an agenda. We are not the only country to have done this.

@QualityChecked

Absolutely!

And if the government didn’t, then it would be negligent in its response.

@QualityChecked

Like we did with flights from Italy right at the start, yes.
QualityChecked · 26/11/2021 11:06

Yes. But by all means force an agenda. We are not the only country to have done this.

I don't have any agenda, I'm just interested.

UK has high levels if vaccination now. It is expected that vaccines will be effective against this variant.

When it was ripping through Europe government was determined to keep borders open...

I cant see how the action taken to reduce the spread of a new variant is racist?

Can you explain why you think it is OP?

Listener2021 · 26/11/2021 11:08

It is by no means expected that current vaccines will be effective against this variant.

It would have been inexcusable not to immediately shut down flights.

Heyvedge · 26/11/2021 11:09

I doubt they had a trade deal with them.

WhatMattersMost · 26/11/2021 11:12

It is expected that vaccines will be effective against this variant.

I've not read this at all. The opposite is being investigated in fact. Source please?

I think so. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59428398 The UK cannot take a risk over a new coronavirus variant circulating in southern Africa which may be able to evade the protection of vaccines, the transport secretary has said.

...

Dr Hopkins said scientists needed to learn more about the variant before they could be certain but it appeared that "there's mutations which increase infectivity, mutations that evade the immune response - both from vaccines and from natural immunity - and mutations that cause increased transmissibility".

Think of all the time and money UK had spent of getting population vaccianated and dealing with high infection rates - people in hospital/off work/constant testing - and fact we didn't shut with delta varient in time and suffered because of that.

Though they do seem to think all they can do is buy time and mointor the situation - if they can buy enough time to modify vaccines or push it getting here till after flu season would probably be a good idea.

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 26/11/2021 11:16

Wow, seriously? You need to think everything that gov does have hidden agenda?

Hellocatshome · 26/11/2021 11:16

It is expected that vaccines will be effective against this variant.

Isnt it in fact the axact opposite of this.

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 26/11/2021 11:17

UK has high levels if vaccination now. It is expected that vaccines will be effective against this variant.

When even scientists aren't sure about this variant yet, how do know it so well?

QualityChecked · 26/11/2021 11:18

I just think thisnis being dealt with very differently to other new variants. Maybe because lessons have been learned.

Notice has been given of other changes to restrictions, even in the very recent past.

Plus surely it's naive to think we can actually stop it arriving anyway? Once once case is in, it's here.

I listened to the scientists say so on the news last night.

Ffs stop being an idiot

Listener2021 · 26/11/2021 11:21

At the very least, if we can push back arrival time to spring it would probably save thousands of lives.

You are spreading misinformation and seem determined to look for a racist agenda, despite the fact that ethnic people in this country are already suffering more than the white population.

So it seems pointless to continue talking to you.
