Young child needed hospital for covid?

Spacemonkey2016 · 20/11/2021 19:20

My 5yo DS has had cases in his school this week, but negative LFTs all week. My 1yo DD developed a very high fever yesterday (peaking at 40.5), and my DS a cough, so had PCRs this morning (awaiting results). My son's cough has worsened throughout the day to almost continuous, has developed a fever this evening and looks awful. I dug out my old Samsung phone to use the oximeter, first reading was 85 (which I am assuming and hoping was wrong!) And then got a couple of 92s half an hour later.

I am on the phone to 111, been on hold for over an hour currently. But I always thought covid was mild and straight forward for young kids. Has anyone else's 5 and unders needed medical attention for covid? (Which I am assuming this is). Am I overreacting? Don't want to drag poorly, sleepy DS out of bed into the cold if it's not necessary.

Hope everything turns out OK.
I think you're doing the right thing.

Ostryga · 20/11/2021 20:08

With children it is NEVER a fuss about nothing. They are usually fine, but can go downhill so quickly.

Hope everything is ok

Newuser82 · 20/11/2021 20:09

Really hope everything goes well and everyone makes a fast recovery!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/11/2021 20:10

Better to be safe x

bumblefeline · 20/11/2021 20:11

Hope your DS is ok.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 20/11/2021 20:17

I hope all is well, please keep us updated.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 20/11/2021 20:19

Glad he is being checked OP.

Coyoacan · 20/11/2021 20:25

I'm so glad they've gone to hospital. Better to take the risk of being a ridiculous time-wasting than to risk your child getting more seriously ill.

elliejjtiny · 20/11/2021 20:26

Glad your ds is being seen. Hope your dd feels better soon too.

Livingthemagicyears · 20/11/2021 20:45

Hope alls okay, I agree with BIWI, I'd mention if dd temp doesn't come down also! Speedy recovery to them both!

BoredZelda · 20/11/2021 20:49

But I always thought covid was mild and straight forward for young kids.

No, this was just the narrative that was pushed to convince us that keeping schools open was a good idea.

As with any virus, kids can be affected by it.

Summerfun54321 · 20/11/2021 20:49

Everything crossed all is ok Flowers

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 20/11/2021 20:50

My friend works in a paed ward and they have a lot of kids in currently with this chest/respiratory virus, can't remember its name, they are as packed as at the height of covid.

So, go go go and get him seen, there's some nasty things about, not just covid.

ThorsLeftNut · 20/11/2021 21:02

I wouldn’t believe that oxygen reading, for children they generally need an additional adapter too. At 71% you would see a visual aspect of it.

My little boy was In hospital with Covid when he was 4 months old right at the start and now has chronic chest and breathing problems. The cold bugs this year are flooring him. Glad your husband is taking him in.

Spacemonkey2016 · 20/11/2021 21:07

He's been seen and he's okay, thank goodness. Bloody oxygen levels at 97, but dropping to lower 90s when coughing. Hopefully he will be able to come home soon, but am relaxing a bit and not harassing DP with texts now that I know he's 'alright' (feels pretty shite) I imagine.

111 called me back after they had already left for the hospital, and the GP was lovely. Assured me she would absolutely have been saying come to A & E, and phoned me back several times until I could confirm their safe arrival at the hospital. DD seems much better in herself than DS now. Just sleeping peacefully and temp has come down with nurofen.

Genuinely, thank you all for the advice and support.

Hey pleased he’s being seen

Docs are happy to be over cautious with small kids as they can go downhill quickly, but equally can recover very quickly.

Hopefully a false alarm and he’s sent back home.
Don’t be too alarmed if they admit overnight though. When my son had bronchiolitis we were in for quite a while, in hindsight it was probably a a bit OTT but docs were right to be cautious and I’m very pleased they were

Frazzled2207 · 20/11/2021 21:12

Cross posted,
Pleased that all seems ok

They won't discharge him until his heart rate comes down. They've just given him some more nurofen for the fever to see if that brings his heart rate down. He isn't going to be very happy with me tomorrow Confused

He’s in the best place, try not to worry.

WLAH · 20/11/2021 22:06

Glad he was taken to be checked out

PokemonGoGoGo · 21/11/2021 16:19

How are your little ones today @Spacemonkey2016?

Spacemonkey2016 · 21/11/2021 16:24

@PokemonGoGoGo

How are your little ones today *@Spacemonkey2016*?
Thank you for asking! My DD is absolutely fighting fit, DS is still fairly poorly, hasn't moved from the sofa all day. But just seems generally unwell, instead of worringly so, as he was last night. Nurofen and calpol doing the trick today. Still no covid results mind!
