Are were protected from similar because we do have decent vaccine take up or could it happen here?

It's very close and not usually a draconian country (I don't think?).

Noooo the situation sorry

We’ve had longer lockdowns than that in the past.

If our hospital admissions went nuts and we really couldn’t cope, yes I think we would have a lockdown. I don’t think that will happen though.

Compulsory vaccination won’t happen here. Compulsory mask wearing might come back again though and maybe vaccine passports for certain places.

What's disgusting?
Spiceup · 19/11/2021 12:08

Yes, I'd got to a place where I was fairly confident that there be no more lockdown, maybe some restrictions, but not confined to home and everything closed again. Now I'm not so sure .

I doubt it would happen here, they couldn't even make the fines stand up in court, in our county all the £10,000 fines were dropped apart from 2 where they just had to pay at most about £700. I think there were 14 issued in total

Same. Didn’t think they’d be a lockdown again and still sort of don’t otherwise what’s the point of us all getting vaccinations but lately it’s been ripping through our area and schools and I’m not so sure now.
Spiceup · 19/11/2021 12:28

I'm really starting to think "we'll" end up panicking in the week before Christmas again.

I very much hope I'm wrong, but....

I don't think I would be in a hurry to get a large turkey, if there is a lockdown I think many will break the rules to see close family including myself but they won't be large turkey size gatherings

1990butfeel21 · 19/11/2021 13:20

It's so worrying. I had been feeling quite positive but don't see why we'd escape the same fate. The only glimmer is that we've had such high cases for so long there might be less room for exponential growth. Not sure if I'm clutching at straws.

We are currently protected as the English really do hate ID cards and forced experimental vaccines of dubious quality.

The government know a lot of people will kick off if implemented and the police are not in any position to keep the peace under such circumstances.

Remmy123 · 19/11/2021 13:33

There is no way they wouid shut shops / restaurants etc again here - economy is too important and at this point it's unnecessary.

Also, are people really prepared to not see thier vaccinated loved ones again?

Not sure anyone wouid follow this time.

Glinsk · 19/11/2021 13:35

Somehow I don't see it coming here.
In the early days of the pandemic we watched what happened in Europe and failed to act before it inevitable came to us.
This time I think maybe we have had such high rates for so long compared with the rest of Europe that they are behind us in terms of peaks and waves.

Rates of vaccination make a huge difference. Those with over 80% of the population done seem to be fairing better (Spain and Portugal).

Worldgonecrazy · 19/11/2021 13:38

Compulsory vaccination probably by next autumn in England. To count as vaccinated you will need to have had your second Pfizer booster, so four shots in total.

I would love to be wrong about this.

Would probably not worry those who are vulnerable. I'd have a shot every month to avoid another bout of covid.
UnmentionedElephantDildo · 19/11/2021 13:44

They have said all along that the autumn/winter could be bumpy (euphemism for 'it could yet all go horribly wrong')

Cases are rising again. But the key bit of data now is hospital admissions, because when the NHS becomes the NCS we are in big trouble.

Rates are falling, which is to be expected as they lag about a week behind the new infections.

if we want to get through relatively unscathed, there are two things that will make a difference
a) being vaccinated - the unvaccinated are much more likely to end up in hospital
b) keeping a modicum of SD (in the hope that it takes the edge off the rates) such as masks indoors (esp public transport), not getting close to strangers, better ventilation.

If the rates get too high, then stricter imposed measures will be needed. Even countries with totally different health provision are currently concerned about projected winter rates, and are ready to act to avoid overtopping services

KimWexlersPonyTail · 19/11/2021 14:36

I was the only person on a packed bus today wearing a mask so i expect we could be heading the same way. Sadly people cannot be trusted to behave sensibly and we will all suffer.

Nannyamc · 19/11/2021 14:43

Here in the ROI our rate is higher than Austria. New restrictions today but very loose still. Cases are as high as January. We have 94% vaccinated rate. Boosters are slow. Health system completely overwhelmed with 650 in hospital.Mask wearing still in operation.Elective surgery cancelled. God only knows where this will end !!!!!

1990butfeel21 · 19/11/2021 14:53

@KimWexlersPonyTail you really believe that masks on a bus would stop this? Germany have a mask mandate...

It's a virus. They spread. Not because people aren't 'sensible' but because it's what they do.

EileenGC · 19/11/2021 15:02

The UK never had ‘compulsory mask wearing’. You can just declare yourself exempt.

Germany is seeing a rise in case because the mask mandate was relaxed. In schools and offices and some large events.

And because, like said on another thread earlier, it’s a virus. Virus gonna virus.

Hope that poster doesn’t mind me stealing that Grin

mibbelucieachwell · 19/11/2021 16:19

Masks won't stop aerosol inhalation though. Droplets yes, but aerosol no. Ventilation is more important but not much has happened on that front.

Isn't it entirely sensible though?

If the forecast says rain in a few days, you go outside and enjoy the sun while you can.

Maybe saving for a rainy day should be the better metaphor. But recent experience of government promises probably suggests not.

MissAmbrosia · 19/11/2021 21:29

In Belgium the numbers have gone mad. And it's worse in Flanders where the vaccine take up is the highest! Like UK it runs rampant through schools - and Flanders did stop mask wearing (as PP mentioned above in Germany). In Brussels, where mask wearing is still obligatory in indoor spaces, the number of new cases is much lower. Though still high.
