Positive LFT, what’s the likelihood it’s wrong?

Curtainpoleofdoom · 18/11/2021 16:35

Just wondering if it’s possible that the positive LFT was incorrect? Took the PCR a day after the +LFT, two days after a -LFT and waiting for results of PCR.

Also, you have to isolate for 10 days since symptoms started. Is that the “three” symptoms the government recognizes or Amy illness? dD was tummy trouble weeks back, then a runny nose. If we go by those symptoms she can be free again probably about the same time as we get the PCR results! That doesnt seem right.

Well my dd had two (faint) positive LFTs and the PCR was negative. We did another a few days later to be sure.

I would count from the day of any symptoms or positive LFT.

Dd has had another faint positive LFT a couple of weeks later so waiting again for a PCR result!

My dd had a strong positive lft tested positive on pcr but ds had 7 positive lft followed by a negative pcr. He's isolated for 10 days anyway as that's what we were advised to do as he's had so many positive lft and now waiting on another pcr which I think will be negative as he's now starting to test negative on lft I'm so confused by it.
With dd we were told to count the symptoms as day 1. My dd has runny nose, tummy ache, slight cough and sores in her mouth but no fever.

Skysblue · 18/11/2021 16:48

Very unlikely a positive lft would be wrong. They give a lot of false negatives but false positives are much more rare and I think require a lab mixup.

IAAP · 18/11/2021 16:49

My son tested positive on a lfd and we all tested negative on PCR then recalled a week
Later and he was positive we were all negative.

WELL

DD’s LFT was positive. Her PCR has come back negative.

This is the second time this has happened in a matter of weeks.

JanglyBeads · 18/11/2021 17:07

About 4% are wrong.

“Tummy trouble weeks back” is unlikely to be COVID - did she test with LFT then?

puppeteer · 18/11/2021 17:42

About 4% is right for the false positive. (They are rarely wrong in displaying a positive.)

They are quite unreliable the other way. Some even nearly 50% falsely displaying a negative. Depends on brand. And things may have improved now.

Randox was the worst when we looked, which is why we selected it for our fit to fly return tests. :-)

Curtainpoleofdoom · 18/11/2021 20:47

Yes, she did LFT when she had tummy trouble. It’s just it resurfaced again when she got ALL the Covid symptoms (well, not the fever) sore throat, headache, snotty nose, metallic taste in mouth and unable to smell Lush. I figure that last one should probably be the true test for Covid.

I don’t know what brand the lft were, we’ve got a lot from various sources and we just put our hand in sand pull out a box and work through them.

Oh well, what will be will be. She’s not going to school tomorrow anyway and will have the result and any phone call by Monday. I

Well after 7 positive lft my ds second pcr has come back negative. I'm completely confused. I did mine Wednesday and I've still not heard anything. I had to wait 6 days for my dd positive results.

Curtainpoleofdoom · 19/11/2021 20:14

No, Vanilla! Where abouts are you? We areLondon.

Several positive lfts over 2 weeks, and 3 negative pcrs. Im convinced its the flowflex tests picking up something strange with my Son! I refuse to use them at this point. I will just pcr/isolate as and when contacts and symptoms dictate.

Andacherryonthetop · 20/11/2021 13:48

My sister (in London) had 3 positive lfts but pcrs kept coming back negative. Test and trace told her she didn’t have to isolate. She had a scratchy throat but no other symptoms. Very strange

Curtainpoleofdoom · 20/11/2021 17:36

DD is quite ill with whatever it is. What’s a Flowflex? How can I tell? Still no pcr result.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 20/11/2021 17:41

Flowflex is a brand of nasal only LFD tests I think

Happydaysandhappysmiles · 20/11/2021 17:50

So if my pcr comes back negative then I don't need to isolate despite strong lateral flow positive? Have cold symptoms but no classic covid ones so far

Elephantsparade · 20/11/2021 17:57

I am hearing a lot of false positives at the moment. We just had a positive on a floflex ltf but awaiting pcr result too.

Vanillacupcake33 · 20/11/2021 18:00

@happydaysandhappysmiles I'd contact 119 and ask them that's what I did with my ds. They advised me to have him self isolate and do another pcr which was negative so we then went by that but by then he'd already done his isolation. My dd was unwell 7 days before she actually tested positive and I was sure she had covid but had a negative pcr then 7 days later she gets a positive flow test followed by positive pcr. Her symptoms were all cold like and stomach related too.

@curtainpoleofdoom contact 119 and ask where your results are I had to do it with dd last week and I waited 4 days with no results and git them today through email after ringing 119.

Curtainpoleofdoom · 20/11/2021 18:09

Ah, yes we’ve got one box of the new type tests but not used them yet.

I’ll call 119 if we’ve not heard tomorrow. She’ll have isolated for 10 days by then anyway.

Happydaysandhappysmiles · 20/11/2021 18:11

Good plan, I was going to contact my gp on Monday but 119 would be better. Gut feeling says it will be positive though

supertedious · 20/11/2021 18:17

I had a positive and negative LFT. When I went to the testing centre I asked if the PCR was negative then surely I don't have it? Wrong. I was told one positive LFT was more accurate and to re do the PCR if it came back negative.

As it turned out my PCR was positive and luckily I had a very mild case (head cold and nothing else). Symptoms only showed up on day 7.
