Can the vaccination give a positive test result?

And if so does it matter?

I had my booster this morning. This afternoon I heard that a colleague has tested positive so did a LFT, which is positive.

I haven't seen himself since Tues last week and don't know of any other positive contacts but of course I wouldn't necessarily know.

Anyway, is this a "real" positive test or likely to be a result of the vaccine? I.e. if you have "flu like symptoms" as a side effect would you also have a positive test?

Plus they asked me if I had Covid and I said no. Does it matter if I might have?

Vaccines don't cause false positives, so you should treat your lateral flow as positive for COVID and take a PCR to confirm.

Source:
"Could vaccination cause a false-positive COVID-19 lateral flow device (LFD) antigen test result, or a false-positive PCR test result?
No. The LFD test detects a different protein of the virus than the one encoded in the vaccine, and the PCR test detects different genes of the virus than the one included in the vaccine. There is no possibility of cross reaction."

No the vaccine shouldn't do that. You'll need a PCR to confirm the positive test. I had my booster today and they asked whether or not I had already had covid, I had but about 6 weeks ago so they said that was fine. If you do get a positive PCR you should get a phone call from your GP or medical professional so you could ask them about the vaccine just before a positive PCR?

Ok so if I do have Covid (probably) I shouldn't have had the vaccination this morning

Why does that matter?

I got the vaccine yesterday and found out my daughters a close contact. I haven't got a test yet but was similarly wondering what the problems with having a vaccine and covid at the same time might be..

MadeForThis · 15/11/2021 18:40

I think the worry is you might have worse symptoms if you have the vaccine in your system at the same time as live covid. But it's not a guarantee.

The LTF could also be wrong.

Well this is one of the more useful threads I’ve read for some time ! Obvious qs but I had no idea of answers. Soon to have my booster so good timing. Hope all is ok op.

JanglyBeads · 15/11/2021 18:45

96% of pos LFTs are correct, unlikely to be wrong.

@purpledaisies posted official advice for vaccination centres about why you shouldn’t be jabbed if you know you have COVID on another thread, it was just so that side effects don’t get mistaken for symptoms and vice versa iirc.

Don’t worry.
