Flying home for Christmas?

It's mid-November and I feel like no one in the media is talking much about international or European flights at Christmas time.

Trying to make plans for Christmas, and have some family/friends due to fly back here to Ireland to celebrate.

But part of me doesn't want to get my hopes up after so much unsettling restrictions in the past 18 months Sad

What do you all think? Do you think flights will happen if everyone has booster jabs etc? Anyone else feel it's unwise to get hopes up?

Feel like I took so much for granted in the past, and all this Covid madness is making me wish all my loved ones lived within driving distance.

Since our Prime Minister historically does nothing for as long as he can get away with it, then does too little too late when things going to shit again is already "baked in" we're not making any hard and fast - or expensive plans for Christmas.

I’ve used my BA voucher (for a trip cancelled during first lockdown) and booked Xmas tickets. We’re going. My mum needs to see her grandchildren, she’s doing radio so we’ll have to take extra precautions, extra tests etc but we are all vaccinated* and I think with today’s news we’ll also get our boosters 2 weeks before travelling…

  • not the 10yo. But perhaps he’ll be vaccinated in Italy, if the emea approves it soon…

(Will the Italians want us, flying in from the U.K.? That’s a different question. But with vaccines…)

I'm in Italy and intending on flying to the UK at some point.
I'm actually waiting for dd's passport and will probably come as soon as it arrives. I'll be undoubtedly paying over the odds for a flight but I've got about 12 vouchers from 2020 and am not risking booking too far ahead in case it goes to hell in a handcart.

What do you mean by “will flights happen”? Do you think they are going to get grounded by Government order? The UK didn’t do that during actual lockdown or pre-vax. they’re hardly likely to do it now.

If you mean will flights be cancelled by the airline then possibly, but not if there is demand. And they would just put you on another flight to same destination anyway.

We're flying back to the UK this December, been away a year and desperate to get home for a visit. So long as we can see our family and friends that's all that matters to me. Where we live has had flights to and from the UK the entire pandemic, although it was scaled back to one flight a week for some months. Even when this country was on the red list there were still a suspicious amount of brits on holiday at the beach resorts here so I can't see there being an issue getting home this year.

StillCounting123 · 15/11/2021 20:21

@Chenga yes, I meant if airlines would be flying as planned. I don't expect gov to block it.

I would think so. I flew back to the UK a few months ago and our return flight did get cancelled due to lack of demand and they shifted us onto a flight the day after. I doubt there will be any such lack of demand over the festive period.
