Hello!!

My dc had very close, prolonged contact with someone yesterday who tested + on a lateral flow in the evening. They have gone for a PCR today. My first question is, do we just do a lft test everyday or if the PCR confirms the friend is +, does dc also need a PCR, I'm thinking it wouldn't show up for a few days if she catches it.

My second question is, my dc has their 1st covid vaccine booked for tomorrow after school. Would this be wise considering the contact yest, if she is harbouring the virus does that make a difference, should I postpone it?

TIA :-)

Children no longer have to isolate for close contact, but personally I would as the guidance seems utterly ridiculous.

I'd definitely postpone the vaccine. Both for the protection of the people doing the vaccines & because your child might feel bloody awful getting the vaccine if they have the virus.

Was the person unwell at all or was it a routine LFT they did?

No i wouldn't cancel the vaccine appointment
If the other child get a positive PCR and your child is deemed to be a close contact they will be advised to go for a PCR too
Not every contact is counted as a close contact

The child was fine all day but in the evening, they said their dinner felt funny so the parent tested, so change of taste they had yesterday and I've spoken to them today and they have a bit of a cough now too.

I'd say my dc definitely will be a close contact as they sat together in a car and spent all day inside together. Thank you:-)

And in England it's only advisory to get a PCR as a close contact
In Scotland its a negative PCR that releases you from isolation if double jabbed or under 18

I think I will get my dc a pcr but I don't think it would show up yet if they were infected would it? I was thinking lft everyday and a pcr around Wed?

My dd caught it at school a few weeks ago. Contact would have been Friday. We did precautionary pcr following Wednesday (we didn't realise until the Tuesday she had as many contacts as she did)

She didn't come out in symptoms until Thursday. She didn't have a positive lateral flow at any time.

Newnormal99 · 14/11/2021 14:59

I would cancel PCR I think. Safer all round for people doing it.

Cookerhood · 14/11/2021 15:12

I think newnormal99 means cancel the vaccine. I probably wouldn't but can see the argument for it.
I would wait until about Tuesday for a PCR as they wouldn't be positive yet. This is part of the problem, people rush off to have PCR immediately when they couldn't possibly be shedding virus after a few hours.

Yes, I have thought that too. We need to wait a few days for PCR. We will lft test everyday as precautions and obviously isolate and PCR if dc develops symptoms. I'd say it's quite likely my dc will catch it with such prolonged contact with someone on the day they test +.
